I switched to an iPhone more in an act to protest Google and I regret my decision. Things didn't get easier, they got harder. I mean for christ's sake, there's no universal gesture for "back". Do I swipe from the side? Press the x button at the top left? The top right? Is there no option I can find so I just force close the app? When I swipe to text with autocorrect turned off why does it change the word I swiped AND…

Swipe up from the bottom (which goes to the app switcher), and then swipe up any app you want to force-quit.

Sorry, I definitely was unclear when angry writing this

I end up doing that a lot but it's honestly a bad solution that shouldn't have to be used

The HN crowd is not representative of the entire market. Most people don't care about the operating system and only want something that 1) is simple to use 2) they already know 3) they happen to already have (most people keep their phones for many years) Also, the largest phone market in the world is the developing countries market. Cheap phones are supreme right now

You hit the nail on the head. The rest of the world yearns for a phone that is cheap, has many years of updates, and not directly subject to US government control. Motorola on GrapheneOS can run away with this and create a Global South phone ecosystem that can rival that of Apple and Google. The fact they are Chinese owned is a feature.

I think so. I'm more comfortable with China having access to my data than the US, at this point.

That's not what I observe. Many non technical people have ethical concerns. This fantasy among the technical crowd here that the general public only cares about cheap and convenient, which is at best condescending, needs to die. Convincing oneself of this only takes meeting non technical people.

Every non-technical person I’ve talked to doesn’t seem to care. In many cases I think it’s because they don’t really understand or the threat is too abstract. For example, collecting information to display ads and manipulate an algorithm to influence how a person thinks, feels, and consumes, for fun and profit. Since they can’t see it, think they’re above it, and see stuff that makes them laugh, they just keep going.…

Most of the non-technical but politically-attuned people I know are the ones who are actually concerned about the Apple+Google monopoly. The technical people are the ones who don't care.

what's it called? searching Settings for "pulse", "width", and "modulation" all produce no results.

Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Reduce White Point Also Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM) if you're on Tahoe.

iphones ship an accessibility toggle to disable PWM.

what's it called? searching Settings for "pulse", "width", and "modulation" all produce no results.

The setting is called "display pulse smoothing" (the description says it WILL disable PWM) and is available in iOS 26, not sure about earlier versions.

I think that group of people is divided between those who think they're above it and don't care at all and those who do care but feel powerless to stop it and try not to think about it. Both end up looking the same on the surface

I move them from the, “doesn’t think about it” to “thinks they’re above it”, when they make claims that their algorithm isn’t like that, they can see the manipulation tactics, etc… while at the same time being fired up over some nonsense they saw in their feed or thinking AI stuff is real. It’s clearly impacting them, but their hubris prevents them from seeing or admitting it.

It was common knowledge in my circles back at the time of the acquisition, but that's been 20+ years ago now. I try to bring attention to it whenever I'm asked about using Lenovo gear.

I’m pretty sure OP is being sarcastic. The companies I have worked for in the past have always sworn by Thinkpads. I don’t care who owns them Thinkpads are amazing.

I can only supply you with facts. Trust could be an emotional word after all.

Using a device manufactured by an adversary-owned entity defeats the sole purpose of MDM. Your data isn't safe within an OS compiled by a Chinese company that "originated as an offshoot of a state-owned research institute." [1] There are so many layers where a backdoor could be hidden within the stack.

I don't think Big Techs or any companies that take data security seriously would accept such a device.

If you don't want your payments to be tracked you need to use cash or crypto. Otherwise, just use a credit card. I really don't see how unlocking a phone is easier or more convenient than using a credit card.

The watch is on my wrist, or the phone is already in my hand. The credit card is buried in a wallet that needs to be taken out of and put back into a pocket. Also “unlocking” isn’t an inconvenient step, on iPhone it just happens automatically. As it should on android if the fingerprint sensor is in a convenient location.

Ease of use is, unfortunately, exactly what Apple and Google request your data for in exchange.

There are wallets like ridge that I use for NFC with card, there’re also phone cases with card holders. It’s not like there’s no solution to this problem..

If anyone from Motorola reads this thread; the market is beyond ripe for a good shake up. Going full open source and pushing updates & openness, user control and freedom, you will gobble up a good chunk of market share. Make MDM easy & first class (no third parties...), and a ton of corp will roll it out too. We need you more than you think.

I don’t think so. Motorola Mobility is owned by the Chinese Lenovo, making it an adversary-owned entity in the eyes of most Western governments. Even with a fully open-source OS and first-class MDM, the company would struggle to gain significant market share. The Hardware Root of Trust and the binary blobs would still be compiled by a firm that Western governments view as a fundamental supply-chain risk.

Even then, it can be solved by having open-source firmware, kernels, drivers and userspace. If they make that the core value proposition, they will win.If they can guarantee the entire execution chain is open & clean, or even just flashable with custom firmwares/kernels, that would be amazing.
