The statement you say was O'Hara was made by McLaughlin (DHS employee). If the article implies otherwise, it's incorrect. Here's the facts as I see them: A protestor who had a gun he was legally allowed to carry got involved in an incident with ICE/Border Patrol. The protestor was interacting with the agents and other protestors, at which point BP or ICE pepper sprayed him and took him down to the ground. At least 4…

My wife who is very offline saw a Bovino photo yesterday and asked me point blank “why is he dressed like a Nazi? he looks like that guy from Man In The High Castle”

He knows, he knows we know, he is proud of it

The story you're talking about was on the front page mostly between about 1pm and 3pm U.K. time, then hovered around the bottom of the front page and dropped off as most of the U.S. came online. And you're talking about one article but asserting a trend or pattern. Here are recent stories about U.S. politics with inflammatory titles that spent multiple hours (over 22, in one case) on the front page. The Palantir app…

You're really comparing these to the following headline? > The UK is shaping a future of precrime and dissent management All of your examples focus on specific events and factual claims, not sweeping doom and gloom claims about the state of the US. I'll leave the reader to draw their own conclusions. By the way, we're both making claims here based on what we've seen of HN, not some kind of objective scientific analys…

You've cited one example and claimed it to be evidence of a trend. But you haven't shown evidence of a trend. One-offs happen all the time on HN for all kinds of reasons – randomness as much as anything else. I've provided five examples I could find quickly. I'm not getting further into a debate about the definition of “inflammatory”. When discussions turn into debates about definitions of inherently subjective terms it's definitely time to stop.

You are proposing that every customer identify themself for every transaction, and that every store verifies that identity against a state maintained list. "Stop their payment cards" just makes things a little inconvenient for the bad guys. What you are proposing makes everything very inconvenient for everyone. Mental models differ indeed.

That's not what I'm proposing at all.

Are you and toomuchtodo the same person?

Think about why the administration and its backers lie so frequently: they know they’re lying, and they know that evidence will come out showing that they’re lying, but they’re gambling on a lot of people being busy and not following the story closely enough to realize how misleading the initial claims were. They do that because their policies are unpopular and they would lose power if most people voted. That’s why t…

People are not busy; they're willfully blind to the truth. These people hang out on Facebook which will never surface the truth to them, only misinformation.

Some people are willfully blind but there are a ton of people who are comfortable enough that they can just tune out. This kind of extreme stuff, things like the tariffs, etc. are getting through to them but it has to get shockingly bad for things to penetrate.

Trump-voting but not dedicated-to-evil relatives I know (I have others who are dedicated to evil, they're beyond hope—incidentally, this is a whole thing in Republican circles, folks who haven't been around actual red-state Republicans since the '90s or so have no idea how common some really shocking views about the validity of state violence on people who annoy or politically oppose them are, they outright like this…

Yeah, I know a few people like that too. In a way it’s good that the administration went with the bold “he had a gun so we were justified in executing him” claim because that went so hard against decades of 2A claims that it got people to actually do more than skim the headline.

The point is that we are both basing our point of view on our accumulated experience of reading HN and then looking for examples to illustrate that point of view. It's a misreading of the discourse to complain that these examples aren't strong 'evidence' for the points of view in question. Of course they are not; they are merely illustrative examples. And realistically, you don't even really want me to send you a 100 page evidence dossier, do you?

Your specific examples are not very convincing, but as I said, anyone reading can compare the headlines and judge for themselves on that point.

But this person did not even have a gun in his hand. He had a gun on him, concealed. In fact, the video shows another ICE agent walking up to him and digging it out and taking it away. The execution happened after all of that. The most likely situation is that he actually voluntarily told them that he has a firearm because he is a lawful gun owner with a concealed carry permit. Most gun owners know that this is the b…

ICE is not law enforcement any more, they are terrorist killer commandos now.

Killer Commandos loyal to DJT.

People have been making a version of this argument for as long as I've been doing this job. There is always a feeling of this-time-is-different, how-can-you-not urgency. I'm not saying that's wrong, but there's a counterargument. The counterargument is that political flames have a way of consuming everything they touch and that if we had listened to this argument in the past, HN would have ceased to exist years ago.…

but fighting against a tyrannical, oppressive, illegitimate government is exactly what a hacker would do? if you want an apolitical forum, don't call it hacker news, it's false advertisement. maybe call it ostrich news or something.

Hacker News is from YC, which is a US organization with some power. As a US organization, it must limit discussion to things that are legal in the US. If you want to plan terrorism, you need to go elsewhere.

The unfortunate truth I think is that no matter how many people might be with this idea of just "rising up" and taking back the country, america is is fucking massive and many cities and towns there is no noticeable ice or border patrol presence. So even if you can get people out and protesting at some common meaningless locations its going to be symbolic at best. If you want out-of-band change in the U.S. it will at…

Street protests are useless because they don't actually hurt. They only work if they can shame the other side, but the other side isn't actually ashamed of what they are doing. The kind of protest that is needed is the kind that is actually disruptive. Nationwide strikes, for instance.

A protest that is actually disruptive is called terrorism, and is off-topic on Hacker News.
