Hetzner could win back some of that love if they release the long-rumoured managed Postgres offering at a price that undercuts most of the competition.

I've been using their managed PostgreSQL for years. PostgreSQL is available on all of their managed servers (mx**).

that's not managed. that's just running PostresQL on a server, which is what I do already. I mean managed like https://www.ubicloud.com/use-cases/postgresql

How much would you be willing to pay for managed Postgres?

Half the price of https://www.ubicloud.com/use-cases/postgresql?

Yeah. If Hetzner prices are equivalent to AWS, what is the point in choosing them.

Don't forget to count your EBS and egress fees when you make your AWS spreadsheet.

Exactly. In addition to the price, another thing that sets Hetzner apart from U.S. hyperscalers is transparency and some degree of honesty.

> AIslop is of higher quality than devslop on average. How did you come to that conclusion? That goes against everything I've heard from people who understand development. Every resource I can find about AI vs non-AI development comes to the exact opposite conclusion you did.

Devslop is spaghetti code that grows organically. AIslop is overly complicated code that someone neglected to read. I just distrust the former more than the latter.

The former has the advantage that there's some person you can go to and ask "what the heck, what were you thinking when you wrote this?" The result can be either or both sides seeing it from a different perspective, having a productive discussion to find a good solution, and either or both sides potentially learning something.

None of that is possible with the LLM flavour of slop. I can ask, but I will just get more brainless slop to describe the original slop in other words. It's a soliloquy that I find neither helpful nor interesting.

I believe so? It connects to Internet, as long as you have a physical presence in a datacenter that is connected to one of their partners.

So you connect AWS to Oracle and connect Oracle to some colo and have a server at that colo and get internet access there and then you're done? Probably still cheaper than AWS egress

No, they support direct interconnect: https://aws.amazon.com/interconnect/lastmile/

So you just need to be present in one of their DCs.

I see you never had to work on slop left by someone that left the company ages ago leaving behind pain and misery.

> I love this baseless optimism. Reminds me of the economic theory (forgot who put it forward): Everything will be fine in the long run. Seems accurate though, I've already noticed no-name Chinese manufacturers stepping it up, throwing caution and capital to the wind and leaning in as hard they can. Following the typical Chinese model of how they get involved in markets, we're just a couple years away from memory bei…

In that scenario, maybe SSD prices drop enough that spinning disk loses relevance.

I don't see that possibility from a data retention duration perspective. SSDs are glorified and addressable capacitors at the end of the day, and they leak.

I literally migrated last week, and saved 8x by ditching AWS for Hetzner.

Just out of curiosity, which parts of AWS were you using? EC2 and something else? It's very simple to move when you're just using AWS as a source for VPS capacity, but when you've got lambda functions, S3, SQS, RDS and other nice acronyms in the mix the ditching becomes a lot harder to justify.

I was using fargate, route 53, managed postgres. Also the container registry i think. Not nothing, not too complicated

Other than the price increases, any issues with Hetzner? Any alternatives you would recommend?

Pricing was the "selling" point. People chose Hetzner for their affordable prices compared to anybody else. But when Hetzner is priced like everyone else, it makes it harder to pick them over the giant AWS, GCP, Digital Ocean etc.

digitalocean has better pricing now, im actually migrating stuff right now, gcp also but only slightly
