We really need a rule in politics which bans you (if you're an elected representative) from stating anything about the beliefs of the electorate without reference to a poll of the population of adequate size and quality. Yes we'd have a lot of lawsuits about it, but it would hardly be a bad use of time to litigate whether a politicians statements about the electorate's beliefs are accurate.

Polls aren't the end all be all of truth, and can be gamed. They are not a perfect measure, by a long shot.

Thing is, that would be a rebuttal if I'd said something about the underlying tensor fiddling code being understood, and you were claiming that next token prediction was a mysterious emergent phenomena.

Unfortunately that's not the argument I made. My claim is that there's nothing surprising or mysterious about the fact that a system designed to repeatedly generate a highly likely continuation of a sequence of tokens (considered as a member of pre-specified class of sequences) winds up producing something that looks like it could be a member of that class. That's kind of the whole point. These things were designed to predict plausible next tokens, and that's exactly what they do.

I think this goes beyond capitalism. People willing to do something harder or more risky than others will always have a bigger chance to get a better position. Be that sports, labor or anything in life.

I am 1000% OK with living in a world where basic needs are fully provided for,

and competition and drive are worked out in domains which do not come at the expense of someone else's basic needs.

Scifi has speculated about many potential outlets for "human drive," the frontier/pioneer spirit being a big one; if I could name my one dream for my kids it'd be that they live in an equitable post-scarcity society which has turned its interests to exploring the solar system and beyond.

Sports, "FKT" competitions, and social capital ("influence") are also relatively innocuous ways to absorb the drive for hierarchy and power.

The X factor is, is the will to dominate/control/be subjugated to, suppressible or manageable.

If not we're in for a bad time.

"Haha you're basically a human LLM!" is such a weak, boringly robotic rebuttal in nearly any context given how it can be generically applied to literally anything.

You used a lot of fancy words to describe something very simple and not very smart. Reading a story about what could be does not necessarily have any predictive power at all over complex real world systems.
