Leaving tech altogether and working for dystopian companies like Meta are just two choices in a broad band of possibilities. You could also go work for yourself.
What if you were a brilliant young engineer and you wanted to work for a growing company that is being run by sophisticated business leaders who are financially successful enough, and who respect and value their employees so highly that they can afford not to do any of this degrading employee tracking at all? Is it too late for that already?
Well I wouldn't consider myself particularly sophisticated, but I run just such a business myself.
So... no! It's not too late!
You can absolutely do that. But you'll have to network hard and find those people.
It's not impossible, and you may have to work some of those less-desirable jobs in the process. I have a theory that you'll actually find more of those companies as AI proliferates because the work that a single good engineer can do is being scaled very quickly.

It's another example of how the intentions of the good can be easily lead astray by the corruption power brings. Using it as the name of a military contractor misses the point so hard I almost expect it to be intentional, but I suspect it's just teenage-boy level foolishness.
It's not just "just" when people as mature as teenagers are running politics and business.

Don't wanna spoil your dream, but have you actually lived in Latin America? Cost of living might not be what you think. I also have the feeling that foreigners don't really understand the crime situation. Of course, its a big regions with some variation.
I was trying to match the parent comment. Much of Asia would probably cheaper and safer.
I did spend significant time in Asia and I found myself actually more comfortable than in the US. People just leave each other alone.

I've heard stories of current day federal employee performance reviews where, unofficially, no manager is permitted to give out a perfect 5 out of 5.
I've seen that same policy in regular corporations. Giving any member of a team 5/5 meant a personal phone call with HR and your skip level to justify it, while the message was sent unofficially beforehand that having that meeting would be bad for a manager's career.
when I had >8 direct reports I was usually allowed to give a single 5/5, greatly exceeds expectations, etc, but it was also made clear to me in unrecorded formats that I also better have someone with a failing score if I did that.

Everyone says this, and then rushes out to buy the new iPhone, subscribe to Netflix and post about it to X or Facebook. Everyone is addicted to unnecessary luxury. If I suggested that you take a principled stance, your lifestyle would be offended.
A normal non-FAANG tech salary will support such sybaritic luxury as busying a phone and using Netflix.
That's not the issue. The problem is financially supporting unprincipled businesses while virtue-signalling your conscientious objection.

The number of people in these comments who would be happy to be "paid well" to contribute to what's inarguably a huge net negative worldwide is exactly how the company got to this point. It's astonishing how many people value a ton of money over doing something good. Everyone who talks about setting values aside for cash is the problem. Gross.
There isn't a giant leap between the workers and the users. Stop using meta products period.

Did everyone like this Stephensen in this thread? I read Cryptonomicon and Seveneves, mostly. They slogged for me a bit. But I love what he writes about, so willing to try another one (even if he doesn't have an editor). It sounds like this could be topical 2027 read. I have a long summer ahead of me.
I loved Cryptonomicon and most of his early work. I didn't care too much for his Baroque Cycle.
