I switched from iPhone to Android and I was fully expecting a world of pain but I was (am?) pleasantly surprised. The back button thing is real. When I have to use someone else's iPhone I immediately feel the lack of consistency. And KDE Connect is fantastic to use. So many things on iPhones are just annoying for no reason. I don't want to buy a 1000 dollar computer to look at my photos, come on now.

I had never heard about this app. I thought the era of advertisements taking over the lock screen ended back in the Android 4.x days! But also, thinking from the business perspective, it's difficult to make phones meet such a low price point without either significantly compromising their performance or stuffing them full of ads to subsidize the price.

I assumed it did something like that, but I honestly don't even know what it actually does, because the moment it gets loaded or anything like that the phone locks up and has to be manually reset using an obscure power button combination.

To add insult to injury it re-installs the app if you remove it and re-enables the app if you disable it. This is done by the carrier/mfg specific application which cannot be removed.

Totally agreed. That one silly gesture is the one thing still keeping me with Motorola, it really has become second nature. It's almost bizarre how I immediately do it as soon as I'm in any kind of darkness. I had to spend a couple of months with a phone from another brand and it was actually really annoying not having that!

That said, the software on my current phone has become bad enough (lack of updates only a couple of years after release, auto installing of bloatware every so often) that I had vowed that my next phone would not be a Motorola, probably I was going for a Samsung (Pixels are too expensive where I live).

But this announcement might just be the thing that keeps me on the Moto train. I'm really hoping this works out.

I actually don't regret going in and turning "show dead" on so I could see it. Knowing that someone is considered a lolcow is legitimately useful information.

It might no be polite, you might not like it, but it is useful data to people who prefer their truths entirely unfettered by nosy busybodies who call themselves "moderators".

Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Reduce White Point

Also Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM) if you're on Tahoe.

Meredith Whittaker is not a techie AFAIK. Either way, I'd just like to know more about the thought process going into Signal's product and engineering decisions. The Signal team seems extraordinarily tight-lipped and that doesn't exactly inspire trust from where I stand.

Their blog has (or had?) some extensive technical explanations, for example about their implemenation of features utilizing SGX.
