Yeah, and that goes very well doesn’t it? That’s why users end up with tons of spyware and bloatware. And if they don’t, they might not be as non-technical as you think.

you might end up with an ad- and app-store- riddled europhone and if you decide that you want to buy a us or international spec iphone you won’t be permitted to do so.

Perhaps you missed the news but there is a bigger bully in town. The U.S gov is looking to ban tiktok so you may not be able to use it at all. Not that I think tiktok is worth my time but I am pro choice.

That doesn't sound like a good business plan. Are you sure the shareholders would approve it? Perhaps Apple should stop selling in China too instead to handover the approval process to the CCP(btw that's a bigger bully. Do you like it? )

Also although I've been an Apple fan since the ipod I would stay behind EU on this one. First Apple defies us with that open letter about taxes(thinking the siphoning tax money out of Europe is somehow the right thing to do) and now they stop selling in Europe unless we surrender to its monopolistic behaviour?

I think we are all good. Hopefully they will focus more on the hardware value and less on pushing users to buy subscriptions(i.e icloud storage).

Apple famously went with gorilla glass over plastic for the original iPhone, despite glass being more breakable, because when it would break users tended to blame themselves rather Apple. Plastic on the other hand scratched just from everyday use and users would have blamed Apple for that cheap design. Perceived fault matters.

Interestingly, I think this can be used to argue either side.

I agree probably not the best business plan. Apple has plenty of cash so maybe it comes down to something more important than market share - principal.

On the other hand I don’t see how the U.S. banning TikTok has any bearing on Apple being the security gate on IOS. I don’t use TikTok myself but if I decided to at least I would do so with the knowledge that it at least meets Apple’s standards. I wouldn’t even get that if I was forced to use a 3rd party app store.

I assume apple can tell it's users that they cannot guarantee security of apps they download from another app store similar to how they do with the recent privacy changes? When someone like tik tok or fb realizes that their downloads are reducing significantly they'll still offer it from the apple app store.

Lots of the free apps and f2p games on the apple app store could be described as spyware and bloatware, so I fail to see your point.

Do you not remember the prevalence of viruses in the early 2000s? And how malware used clever UX to get people to install things?
