I think you need to make a case for DEI being “one of the industry’s greatest strengths”. It’s not obvious to me.

McKinsey has studied this extensively had has repeatedly found that diversity is financially beneficial to companies. They've had at least 4 reports on the subject. https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inc... Landing page: https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inc... It's obvious why this is the case if you sit down and think about it. Echo chambers of like-minded individuals ca…

Citing those studies should be peak confirmation bias.

So McKinsey made a study with a low risk feel good conclusion with outcomes that are completely subjective based on data that can be completely massaged and we are supposed to go all in with DEI and discrimination?

initial comment - 'gitlab no more dei' secondary comment - 'suck it fascist' third comment - 'fascism and communism would both get rid of dei' whereabouts did the room get misread?

> initial comment - 'gitlab no more dei' You picked out a phrase of a larger post and misconstrued any response as applying that context. Trying to understand how it might be interpreted by other people is expected. What you've been doing is sometimes characterized as being myopic. How other people read this exchange is trivial enough to summarize: * initial comment - new acronym, less clever (CREDIT -> SQOMCO) * sec…

so because its considered funny that no dei etc=suck it fascists, i cant discuss why the joke is incorrectly constructed to me. perhaps the right winger comparison was too much, perhaps the ongoing vomit was an attempt to elicit an explanation. either way you and the other guy did a terrible job at teaching your fellow human being lol

It's literally text autocomplete. You can dress it up however you want but it takes input text and outputs the most likely next sequence.

Is "text autocomplete" supposed to be an insult? To text auto-complete a physicist I would have to understand physics as well as them. To text-autocomplete your words I would need to model your brain.

Text autocomplete is just a descriptor of the technology.

To do text auto-completion all you need to know if the probabilities of words appearing after other words, no understanding of those words or the meanings behind them is necessary.

Wow gitlab. Right when everyone was looking to see if you could lead with all the fails at github, you basically said "We're going to throw our source at ChatGPT and see what happens"

Right? I was seriously considering migrating everything in our company from GitHub to GitLab. Now I'm seriously considering self hosting our git instead.

I don't think hosting git is all that complicated, just install it on a server, create a repo, and push to it.

What is complicated is having a convenient interface for managing the repository (users, groups, and hook-actions) and showing what the repository contains (commits, branches, tags).

I remember back in the day the first part was handled adequately with software like gitosis and gitolite, which just used git repository to manage other git repositories on the system.

compute and memory cost is monotonic with temporary hiccups

I figure you aren't aware of why there are other kinds of interpolation other than linear.

The idea that DEI is a discrimination program is a false implantation by right wing media.

Discrimination is the polar opposite of what DEI programs intend to implement. Unfortunately, we’ve been fighting the tail end of the civil war for the past century and the establishment sees equality as discrimination against their privilege.

I cannot. Please explain the difference to me. Everything I've read about neuroscience is basically the brain is a signal prediction machine. The harness, signals and incentive (hormone) systems may be different, but predicting the future is basic building blocks of intelligence.

How much karma do you have on reddit, probably millions. Only redditors with Dunning-Kruger would say something like this. I reccomend the podcast Machine Learning Street Talk, you'll find plenty of machine learning PhDs who are also neuroscientists that are completely mystified by the brain, how it works and what intelligence is. The people at the forefront of nueroscience definately aren't reducing human intelligen…

I mostly stopped using Reddit in 2016, and was site banned in 2019 (for posting "gnews.com" in answer to the question of which site has the Biden laptop leak).

I didn't say "signal processing", I stated 'signal prediction machine'. This is not my idea, I would say my more source is the book On Intelligence, written by neuroscientists https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Intelligence but this idea is hundreds of thousands of years old.

Prediction as intelligence is hardly a fringe topic https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13164-021-00538-5

Try to not be insulting when you post here, this is not reddit.

No it is discrimination one way or another.

DEI put its finger on the scale to favor some specific outcome so by definition this IS discrimination.

You can make a point that without DEI there is also societal discrimination as well. I would agree with that.

But let’s call it what it is

You mean decades of regression . The obvious decline started around 2010; coincidentally also the era of the rise of SJW-ism and nontechnical derailing drama. Once the diversity quotas started appearing, the inevitable results were obvious.

I'm not going to get in the argument you clearly want to have, but as I said in my previous comment, I can confirm with my own experience that you're wrong and this trend started earlier than 2010.

Well that’s the problem with arguing through analogy, when you’re wrong you just come out looking like a Fucking Dork. Truly your analogy isn’t wrong, it’s just that you are wrong. A house is a box and it needs walls on each side and a roof like a box. But it’s good to remember that it’s supposed to be a box. That might sound overly reductive, but it’s important to keep the fundamentals in mind in case someone tries…

It’s overly reductive to the point of being wrong yes. You’re being intentionally obtuse. Then again your brain is just some electric meat so why would you be capable of more? Good job calling it a token predictor instead of text autocomplete btw, you’re making progress, my wonderful analogies have already begun to enlighten you. You’ll achieve some nuance yet.

> You’re being intentionally obtuse.

I'm still waiting for you to present a real argument. So far it's just been "nuh uh" and poorly formed analogies.

> token predictor instead of text autocomplete

Same thing, btw.
