Would you also ban store loyalty cards for the same reason?

I wouldn't ban them, but with those I also have a pretty clear view of exactly what information is trading hands. I tell the store exactly what products I bought , in which store and at what time. And in return I might get a rebate or similar. In that situation I can choose NOT to show the loyalty card when the kickback isn't good enough or if I'm buying something I don't think should go in my "profile". (And for thi…

But the data could still be misused, even with your consent. If that's the bar, it's extremely high, given almost all data can be misused.

Try again, but keep things relevant within the past 10 years, and applicable to majority of the population.

Sure! It isn't like negligence-induced explosions have stopped [0]. Companies spy on you [1] and collude to set your rent [2]. Companies decide if you get medical treatment [3], and whether that medical treatment is safe [4]. Companies even decide on whether your food is safe [5]. Now, for a productive conversation, I'd recommend you putting effort in as well, instead of just sea lioning [6]. [0] https://en.wikipedia…

I guess you missed the "and applicable to majority of the population"

Nobody is gonna argue that companies are going to require zero regulation. There will be instances of companies trying to bullshit their way to get more profit, and for this reason the regulations exist, but these all isolated cases.

The point is that widespread advertising legislation on every single company by non technical people in the government under a false pretense of increasing privacy is not really a good thing. Governments should be there to step in when companies get out of line, but in that case, the task is clear. Introducing legislation that later on can be used to push more nefarious agendas are not.

After all, both governments and companies are ran by people.

It's not possible to provide an exhaustive list, but for example: * Hacker News (has promoted content, but without tracking) * Lobste.rs * Wikipedia * Mastodon * Project Euler * Notabug.org * Lingva Translate * Documentation for numerous FOSS projects * Various personal blogs Honestly, it's hard for me to find websites that I regularly voluntarily use and do contain ads.

What do you use for - search, emails, online shopping, news (you mentioned HN but links submitted on HN have ads on them, unless you read only the HN comments)

I use a mailreader to read email. No ads unless someone is spamming me, but that's pretty rare these days. Online shops don't need ads because they already sell their own stuff. I have my own news subscription. Admittedly many shared news links do have ads. For search I use DuckDuckGo; they don't seem to have ads most of the time, but if they do, at least they don't track.

I'm not going out of my way to avoid sites that use ads, but I also don't feel obliged to enable their business model; that's their business, not mine. I care about controlling my own desktop.

Keep in mind that there is a lot of content out there that's funded by Patreon rather than ads. And I think the quality of Patreon-funded content is generally higher, because people consciously choose to support it, rather than it having to use clickbait and other dark patterns to lure your eyeballs in.

Not only is Facebook a tool of oppressive governments, Facebook's own annual revenue is larger than the GDP of 2/3 of the countries in the world. I don't understand why people have this blind spot when it comes to giving corporations a pass on things that they'd criticize a government for. Most corporations are expressly authoritarian organizations, more so than many governments. Neither Facebook users nor Facebook e…

Still I haven't heard about Facebook killing anyone.

If we had been smart, we would have banned Google, Facebook and Amazon on our continent and made our own like the Chinese did. It's telling how ridiculed they still are for this obvious move.

I used to think the Europe was mistaken by demanding that the user's data be processed in Europe and all that, but having read a bit more on history, it's a tactical disadvantage to let someone else have so much control over your society.

> I used to think the Europe was mistaken by demanding that the user's data be processed in Europe

AFAIK there is no such demand. The only demand is that if you want to process EU user's data outside of EU the place where you want to process that data needs to have privacy laws compatible with the EU ones.

The 1st and 3rd link don't seem related to ads. The 4th link isn't loading for me, so I can't tell if it's related to ads. It's not clear to me that the 2nd link will be impacted by this new EU regulation.

Personalized ads means personalized tracking. The consequences are my links.

Removing the ads doesn't remove the personalized tracking AFAIK. The personalized tracking remains AFAIK.

And what's the definition of tracking? It's not clear to me if links 1,3,4 are related to personalized tracking. For example, is TikTok remembering what videos you wanted for how long and showing you recommendations based on your watch history personalized tracking?

The whole discussion is about banning the tracking, not ads. Tracking is defined in GDPR as storing personal information without consent or necessity.

> is TikTok remembering what videos you wanted for how long and showing you recommendations based on your watch history personalized tracking?

Yes, if I did not give consent to create a profile on me.

I agree. I've always heard "charge what the market will bear." Why would a reduction in advertising costs equate to lower consumer pricing — if there's a better margin to be had instead?

Because for most products brand fidelity isn't keeping competition away. Higher than necessary margin does not last long in a competitive market.

Good point. That can be true if two competitors are competing on price as a primary factor. Price might not be the biggest factor, however, and improving the margin would be attainable in that gap.

They don't work effectively if they aren't targeted on who you are. It would be like TV ads. Biggest example is the IOS privacy which has hit whole industry in terms of marketing effectiveness and cost.

Any reference proving this?

FB earnings or any earnings from any company that is heavily dependent on performance marketing. And for small businesses.

But did they compare their earning to those with non-tracking, contextual ads?
