> They would have to refund everyone for every purchase in the long run. That is the minimum they should do. At best they should offer the movie collections for free through competitors.

There's no limit to what the best they could do is. A full refund is just what's simple, fair, and quick. I wouldn't put it past them to try to find some legal basis that the minimum is actually less than that in certain jurisdictions though.

A forced refund to something you purchased years ago is not fair at all. At the very least they should have to pay current market price for a replacement.

Woke in nearly all contexts in 2026 can be substituted for a racial, xenophobic, and/or homophobic slur and mean exactly the point of the person who used it. The lack of actual examples when called out makes it very obvious.

Sure, but that's just arguing over the morality of terms. On the one side you have people worried that their culture is being destroyed, on the other side you have people worried that their culture isn't represented. Both sides seem to think the other side is the devil. Having gamed for three decades now I'd say the shift has been very real. There's a much larger fraction of games that have representation of women, m…

I have no respect for this argument.

It's similar to asking was the end of Jim Crow or slavery progress or the destruction of white spaces and to be sensitive to the people who wanted those to continue. I think a lot of the issues we have today are because people in both periods did not ostracize those people like Europe ostracized the Nazis.

Having a main character that isn't a straight white male is so minor in comparison. But giving that idea credence is a dangerous path backwards to those arguments of the past

Which games specifically were ruined? How were they ruined? Can you provide a single example and explain how it is woke and why it ruins the game?

Concord, the single largest failure by a game company (and really, most other companies too, except maybe movie studios lately). Wasn't that the backlash?

What exactly was so bad about it?

Plenty of PC games, the linux distros that run steam are great too!

Just because valve is a benevolent dictator doesn't mean they don't already have the same dictatorship powers that Sony is currently chiseling out for themselves. I wish NFTs had taken off as a system for managing decentralized transferrable digital purchases instead of being another investment scam.

NFTs never would have given you any more power than Steam as at the end of the day the platform still controls what you can access or not.

Great buildup on Sony's side to gain trust in this move in the gaming community ahead of this announcement when just this week they again pulled hundreds of "purchased" movies from customer's libraries without refund, reminding everyone that digital content is rented, not owned. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/06/sony-erases-digital-...

It probably reduces the amount of media attention if they do it all at once instead of spreading it out over months

It's sadly not stupid from their perspective

Except it really is. I don't see how businesses don't understand how this sort of anti-customer predatory behavior, MBA stuff, is directly driving reduced sales. The PS5, for instance, has only managed 96 million sales. For contrast the PS2 managed 160 million sales to a smaller market with much fiercer competition. And I'm one of those tens of millions opting out. The PS2 felt like a great consumer-focused value. Mo…

Because they have almost definitely already factored in the loss from people boycotting vs the gain due to killing the resale market into their analysis. They are fully aware that some people are going to refuse to buy digital only

The unfortunate truth is that physical sales have been ever declining so the writing was on the wall

Edit: And you can't really compare the PS2 and PS5 in terms of competition. PS5 isn't just competing against other consoles, it's also competing against netflix, youtube, tiktok, any endless scrolling platform. There were much fewer options for entertainment in 2001 than there are now

Steam has been (mostly) a good citizen. But there's not much in the way of legal or technical hurdles to them going down the same path. It's all goodwill and reputation. I hope it's enough.

You can at least make local backups of your Steam games. If a game is removed such that you can't even download it anymore, you can always just install it manually.

That's what GOG offers. And I'd advise anyone to use GOG over Steam for their principles alone. Every game you purchase through their platform is DRM free and they go to a lot of effort to preserve retro titles that would be difficult to play nowadays without a lot of tinkering. They also put no limitation on how many family members you can share your games with.

Sony also used to mock digital only approaches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA Now at a time when memory and storage prices are at an all time high - they pull a move that directly hurts the customer.

I remember when the ps3 released Sony mocked controller rumble as a 'last gen feature'. Now their haptic feedback is the only distinguishing feature of their console.

If you're only counting ones not on their previous consoles. How easy it is to disassemble and clean is a change from prior playstations too.

You can resell game key cards, at least? They seem better than digital copies to me. And first party games are still on cartridge for the most part.

People have convinced themselves that game key cards are terrible, when they're the exact same thing as the old style of cartridges, with the only difference that you don't have the 1.0 on it. People are convinced that game key cards will stop working at some point, when it's the reverse that will happen; your card will be fine, but won't work on a Switch 2, only a future console. Nintendo will close access to their…

Does the switch's "Match Version with Local Users" feature on the software update menu work for this, or is an internet connection strictly required the first time you insert a key card?

You can still download games for PS3 and Vita after they stop selling them. It’s no different from how Steam no longer sells some titles it used to.

Just as you can download old games on Steam for now. Either will pull the plug whenever they want.
