Not op, but: Paying taxes to fund an army. The EU isn't doing any direct fighting in the Russian-Ukranian war, we are however donating and selling things, and being a refuge for those who quite understandably fled in fear of their lives. Nobody's actually violated our sovreignty yet, we have no casus belli to go to war. But as the phrase the bullet cartridge is named after goes: Si vis pacem, para bellum.

Ukraine accepts foreign volunteers.

It's one thing to argue that the US devaluing its wildly overvalued dollar is an effective default. If we do simply print money to make the debt go away- foreign holders of that debt would benefit from being the first to sell for a more stable currency. The last to sell would be left holding the bag, would they not? Wouldn't this cause a run on the dollar and destabilize the world financial system?

The deliberate push to alienate allies pushing them to the other pole (China), is setting up the stage for confrontation. It can then become self-evident China is out to eat the USs lunch so they need to be dealt with. And all the years of China this, China that, will become true and it will be much more palatable to go hot over China or anything else. China will become the new defacto evil empire and everyone in the US will nod in agreement and decide it's time to do something about it. It's gaslighting at a global scale and it's working fine. Probably something like 2027. I don't know if those Macron messages are real but in Europe we are cooked because it's okay to not want global domination, but it's bad when you're being manipulated and you don't even realize why.

Why would a country want to remain a manufactured-good export economy, rather than having the stronger position of a consumer economy that lives off the wealth of the rest of the world?

Why grind away relentlessly in industries with tiny profit margins, when there are high-margin innovation-driven industries that your economy can advance to?

Why stick with producing clothing, when you can move on to cars? Why stick with cars, when you can move on to chips? Why stay with chips, when you can move on to the next new technology that the entire world wants, but which only your economy can produce because it grew the industry from scratch and everybody is playing catch up?

Dictators love autarky because it gives them complete control of the population. Populations should not love autarky, because it makes them poor and robs them of wealth and opportunity.

The bonds are only redeemable for USD. The Fed can always produce USD. So the Fed can always buy back any and all US bonds in existence.

They would have to actively choose to default.
