That's just a list of good inventions. GPS, disposable razor, many of these are not impactful enough to be "black swan but good". And things like clocks and batteries were slowly refined over many, many years, so they don't fit either.

If contemporary scientists cared about proving negatives, let alone assigning prestige to the task, then there wouldn’t be a replication crisis.

This is a common misunderstanding. The main mechanism for self-correction in science isn't about replicating or refuting findings. It's about which science survives to become the basis of other science. If a finding does not bear out, it simply will not become the basis for subsequent science. It's similar to natural selection.

The so-called "replication crisis" is overblown.

If LK-99 fails to be a useful material, it's interesting life will be over very shortly. If it is useful (and even if it's not the promised room-temperature superconductor, but useful in some other aspect), it will continue on in science, in technology - everywhere it might be useful for further investigation.

Exactly, the 99 stands for 1999, so potentially this material has existed for over 20 years and we could have started testing and replication on a much wider scale a decade ago. What benefit have we gained by disseminating this research so slowly?

Less visible? More like invisible if you ask me. There's all sorts of seemingly frivolous research going on at any given moment. A red herring in this case would be no different.

The instant strange behavior becomes apparent it becomes worth researching. I don't see how keeping it silent is anything other than a tragic waste.

If it's bogus, we discover that sooner.

If it's legitimate, we discover that sooner, AND the benefits to humanity can begin 24 years earlier. Think of how much we've accomplished in the last 24 years. Now think of how many benefits could have been reaped during that time by building on this new knowledge (assuming it has practical applications).

If it's truly useful and they knew this 24 years ago: what a waste.

There are many more planetary limits than just climate change, and many of them are governed by how much natural resources we consume and, incidentally, how much waste we produce.

Cheap unlimited energy will just make us push these boundaries even further.

Apparently the theory behind LK-99 was inspired by the studies from Eastern European scientists. However, after the Soviet collapse, the study was lost.

Not energy in and of itself. Cheap unlimited energy will just make us push planetary boundaries even further.

I no nothing about superconductors. And have been largely ignoring this until it seemed more certain. Can someone ELI5 why this matters? What does it enable technologically? Flying cars? Fusion reactors? Magic fix for global warming?

No resistance in wires means limitless power lines, phone lines, batteries charge instantly..
