Here's the definition from the guys behind the word "veganism": > Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it…

That quote seems to be reinforcing my point but your excerpts indicate you disagree, so I'm.not sure why you posted this: I will assume you're disagreeing, sorry if I misunderstood. The adaptations in that quote are about the animals who will be harmed without your intending to do so during your own attempts to survive, like the insects killed during harvest. The essence and the last sentence of the definition are al…

My message wasn't clear indeed.

A word may have different meaning depending on the usage: who, when, context... Formal language isn't the norm for better or for worse. I mostly agree with your two messages but also wanted to add a touch of pluralism: veganism origin and ideal has something to do with ethics by (more or less) avoiding unnecessary harm by avoiding animal exploitation but the goal and means to achieve it may differ.

The interpretation of "possible and practicable" you gave is aligned with my understanding but I can understand other people may include: - [as the article subject] the only food you can eat contains flesh, because you're detained in prison/stay at the hospital - The social pressure is too strong for you to possibly cope with it - Avoiding to use any toiletry that contains carmine, collagen or glycerin may be a hassle when one is away in holiday or work

Also, some people consider excluding bivalves from the list keep intact the goal of harm avoidance.

The cursor is subjective. I can grasp how someone may define themselves vegan and for whatever reason consume some animal products. However debating of the definition itself does not serve the shared cause of animal condition consideration. Instead it is far more effective to focus on shifting the laws (see the article) and bringing the questions/solutions to the public debate, which would solve most of the social pressure. Let's team up for 90% of the animal cause together and when it will be acquired we'll discuss the last 10%.

To end this message, I wish you a pleasant day and share with you a conference I had the chance to assit 2 days ago, I think it's very pertinent - but also in french, I hope the auto-translation are good. It's called "Do vegans harm the animal cause?" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLCRdLa99DE

"They could have just not eaten it" and "they eat what they’re given" are literally opposites of each other. So you don't have an actual point; you're just being an asshat. Why don't you do that by yourself instead of involving other people in your personal misery?

I do have an actual point, you for whatever reason just don’t agree with it. My point is that people in prison gave up their freedom when they committed crimes. They should not be rewarded by giving them dietary choices. It’s a prison, a punishment, not a hotel.

I think you've pinpointed the reason, although unintentionally: the US is so focused on culture wars that people can't visibly follow a vegan diet without being attacked for it.

[flagged]

It's peculiar that I've never heard a vegan say anything even remotely like that, but I often see people complaining about how vegans constantly say things like that. How does that work? Is there a place I need to go to to find all these militant vegans who can't stop talking about how much I suck eggs for sucking eggs?

So I feel justified in classifying your comment as supporting my claim: "the US is so focused on culture wars that people can't visibly follow a vegan diet without being attacked for it."

Thanks for spelling out your point, and yes, I don't agree with it. Being in prison is the punishment. People don't lose their humanity because they are in prison, and they don't need to or deserve to be additionally punished by forcing them to eat meals that go against their religious or ethical convictions.

What's more, people in prison usually don't stay there forever. The idea that it doesn't matter how we treat people in prison because "it's not a hotel" is not conducive to reintegration and is harmful to everyone, including you.

(1) is a negative liberty: freedom from being forced to eat a certain diet. (2) is a positive liberty: actual ability to eat a certain diet. Western society is still mostly blind to the latter type of liberty. Similarly, everyone is free to own a home, but ensuring everyone has the means to actually do so is just not something politicians will even talk about, and is often labelled as "communist" or some other kind o…

Well of course. If you want to know what a "right" is, legally, you need to reverse it. For diet it is quite reasonable: a duty for certain products to be available for purchase (it does make clear that this right does not exist. A few vendors go out of business and your right to eat vegan goes with them) For owning a home, this would be a duty for everyone else to build you a home, satisfying your requirements. One…

That's not how it works. The state isn't forcing doctors and nurse to cure you, it's collecting taxes from everyone to pay willing doctors and nurses to cure the population. Similarly, they could hire construction workers or buy homes and provide them for the general population.

Actually where I'm from the state has indeed decided budgets have priority over rights. In other words it works exactly as you say, as you suggest. So first BIG caveat in right to medical help is that only X people get treated for particular things, as budgeted. Even if the equipment and doctors are available (but of course those are getting "right-sized"). Even goes for access to GPs (there's a massive shortage of GPs, but the government is lowering the number of doctors)

You are number X+1 that needs treatment? Sucks. There's a waitlist. Which in a few cases is pretty bad. You have had a stroke and the doctor wants an MRI, to check for bleeding. The MRI machines are being synergized (meaning a bunch of smaller hospitals only have access by moving patients to a bigger hospital). They can't book a surgeon without confirmation of bleeding (well not without entering the waitlist at the end, without priority, and with a stroke in progress you might as well just book an undertaker). In the best case now you're being moved (you pay for this), potentially with a ripped artery. Best of luck.

There's also more temporary accidents, such as refusing to hire foreign doctors, even where that means parts of the country have to do with insufficient capacity in certain departments or even (in the mountains for now) zero capacity. In theory anything with a waitlist over 2 months is considered insufficient capacity, but if you take that definition, close to 40% of all departments have insufficient capacity. And it's getting worse (Ukraine war, tarriffs, EU lending, Iran war, ... all resulted in extra savings and less capacity)

The same is happening in schools. The law clearly states you have the right to kindergarten did discipline some teachers for teaching in the grass outside of the classroom after parent complaints, of course.

That's also a way to look at rights, I guess. Namely that they are "weak guidelines" and you don't have any way to enforce them against the government and everything just completely erodes over time.

I guess it's true what they say: you can pay market price or you can have shortages. Pick your poison.

With what? You cannot even say WHAT is supposed to be "classic suicidal empathy". You made no point, you just demonstrated distress over the word "empathy" that seems to be so big you cannot even express what your issue is.

Not providing vegan options is morally equivalent to forcing Jews to have pork or non-Kosher meals or Muslims pork or non-Halal meals; it's mean spirited, insensitive, and/or disrespectful treatment. Plus, there are many major religious/ethnic groups that skew towards mandatory and high probability of veganism. Hm, I fundamentally disagree and I sincerely hope there will ever be a time when meat consumption is viewed as equivalent to cannibalism. That sounds like a society I wouldn’t want to be a part of.

I’m surprised you’d come to such a drastic conclusion. I have nothing but respect for your right to eat the diet you choose, but it’s a shame that isn’t something you’re willing to extend to others.

You chose to throw in your two cents without addressing or admitting the facts, just to criticize and rationalize your own inaction.

When lifestyle choices put others at risk of pandemics and untreatable diseases, it becomes my problem. This makes you yet another normalized deviant projecting your unsustainable lifestyle choices on others and trying to shame others who dare to criticize abominable practices. Furthermore, predominant repugnant views of many people currently include enabling the genocide of Palestinians and Lebanese, death penalty, fossil fuel usage, and animal slaughter... these are no good.

And why don't you or anyone eat their pets? Besides distance, utility, and/or cuteness, there's no fundamental difference between wildlife, livestock, and pets when it comes to inflicting suffering.
