Burnham being PM is already pretty well priced in. When he walked back comments a few weeks ago they corrected and my sense is that the market understands that unless there until actual laws or budgets are promulgated, what is said by Burnham isn't really market moving.

What is he going to do without the bond markets - the UK is in so much debt we basically need to jump however high they tell us to, unless he plans to default which would destroy the global financial system and destroy the UK for decades. The only way I can see out of this is to absolutely frack the crap out of the UK and push for more North Sea oil drilling. But we definitely won't do that so maybe we'll try a bit o…

The UK is in a very average amount of debt for a Western country, worse than some, better than others.

You don't need to be perfect, you just need to not be the worst and get picked on.

Are things good? Definitely not, but everyone else is in more or less the same boat

Only the extremely wealthy participate in the UK? That is most certainly not the case in the US, where your average salaried employee has most of their retirement invested in the market

Only extremely wealthy people participate in stock markets, in general. Other people use one of those wealthy people as an intermediary. To participate directly in a market you usually need to lock up at least several million dollars at what is effectively an escrow service, so they can shift it between accounts when transactions happen. All your shares stay locked up in a similar service. The line graph of stock pri…

This is all false in modern days. What you are saying was pretty true 100 years ago, except the google bit. I'm pretty sure you didn't take your meds today.

There really isn't a lot of slack in the welfare system unless you're prepared to be very short sighted and go back to "tent city" levels of homelessness. Which is partly why all previous attempts to cut it have failed. Maybe declaring certain areas of high rent off-limits for housing benefit, but then you have to raise the salaries of NHS staff and teachers living in London so they can afford to work there. Maybe if…

As someone who has lived in a 'mixed block' in zone 1, I think it's delusional to characterise social housing tenants as 'teachers and nurses'. I suspect most teachers and nurses are already in private sector housing in London. I think it could be OK to sell all social hosing in Zone 1/2 and use that money to pay higher wages for teachers and nurses plus state built replacement social housing in zone 4-6. There's pro…

Dame Shirley is that you? I thought you died last month.

ETA: there are possibly five hundred schools in Zone 2 alone. That is maybe 35,000 school staff you're saying should not be socially housed in about 35 square miles. They all have to commute in because, why?

I love that it's a 'tape' - I assume in reference to the early telegraph tapes/tickers: https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co33749...

Amusingly for the security information processors in the US (which handle US Equity consolidated quote and trade data) the trade feed is still referred to as the tape (one of the two governing bodies is called the Consolidated Tape Association). Securities are still associated by which ‘tape’ their trades print on (really which one of the two SIPs the trades will be found on).

I think ...or hope ...he ends more right than left and manages to do what Starmer failed to do a year ago which is to make major reforms to the Welfare system. Its just not sustainable.

Massive handouts via welfare programs is the only thing that keeps left leaning parties in power anywhere in the west. They've failed at bringing prosperity so they just court retirees, the unemployed and hire more government workers. And unfortunately those who rely on welfare outnumber those who work and pay taxes in a lot of western countries, because of the lack of prosperity... Need to hit rock bottom à la Argen…

At least in the UK we’ve recently had 14 years of right leaning party and they might have different rhetoric around it but clearly no one has the stomach to do anything meaningful. Most right leaning voters are old people who love drinking up that welfare.

40 years building exchanges..

> Only extremely wealthy people participate in stock markets, in general. Other people use one of those wealthy people as an intermediary.

This confuses a retail investor with a Clearing Member. Anyone with a phone and a $10 brokerage account has direct, sub-millisecond execution access to US equity markets. Brokers are not wealthy patrons acting as gatekeepers, they are licensed utility providers providing the technical pipeline to the exchange, just like the power distributors who cable and sell you power. They are providing a managed service, being a direct link to the exchange. There are some platforms that are not DMA, direct market access, but there are numerous brokers who offer DMA. I personally don't trust non DMA access, but maybe for larger orders, it might be good to have a man in the middle as a service.

The graph on Google is a trade feed, the last traded price, not buys and sells. If you sign up to one of those discount brokers you have a feed of those buy and sell orders, the order book, live, not delayed like the google trades. No one gets the names of the people buying and selling until settlement. (How I know, I write that code that builds the order book and matches the orders for a living). Not even the brokers.

True large firms trade large orders amongst themselves so they can get a more stable price, but US regulators explicitly mandate real-time reporting for off-exchange and private trades. Once they trade a listed instrument they must report the trade within 10 minutes. Yes they do, this part is highly regulated, if they don't they will be penalised. It's also in their interest as the more pricing, the better the prices. (No conspiracies here, some people have broken the rules but the code is pretty easy to write to make sure this happens, I've worked on that too)

ps, this is not how I 'think' it happens. In some countries this is literally my code.

There’s also a lot of bureaucracy involved in participating in the gilt market directly, rather than using an intermediary. https://www.dmo.gov.uk/investor-information/retail-investors... I don’t think the Treasury really wants to deal with amateurs.

No, but you can hold them through the standard range of intermediaries and still get the tax advantage. NS&I offer a range of retail products - https://www.nsandi.com/guaranteed-returns is a good option but does NOT come with the tax exemption.

You can fully minimise tax by making 0 as well.
