This is so much better than those YC-rejects bragging about raising a fund as if that's a prerequisite for success. A positive cash flow is something to brag about for sure. Congratulations!

To be fair he never said anything about positive cash flow. $100,000 in revenue when your business model is paying your users can easily not be profitable.

It's too bad the app sucks at its advertised purpose (finding good apps). I was excited when I read the description and saw how many people were using it.

Yup, that's what I said in another comment. Sadly no one else here seems to care about product but only about revenue, however it is achieved.

Right this seems like a zero sum game across the agents involved:

  - users
  - advertisers
  - "killer apps" company
It's obvious from the reviews that the users only care about the gift cards. So if they get more gift cards than the other parties get back in app sales commission, the users win. However the terms state you're limited to 3 cards per year and that you lose your points after 60 days of inactivity, so I'm guessing that other parties come up on top via this bait and switch technique. It's also possible that the advertisers get the short end of the stick if they're just paying for impressions.

For the experience and connections. There is more to YC than money.

True, but do you know of many (or any) companies that applied to YC while making a cool $100k/month?

I recall seeing some posts about YC startups trending more in the direction of established companies. But what is more important is whether or not going through YC will help them achieve their goal. If YC helps move from $100k/month to $1m/month it is very much worth it.

I'm just about to go on a hike, but let me respond quickly. I do appreciate tough criticism, but I think there are some rash judgments and misconceptions here.

1) just because the recommendations aren't suited to you doesn't mean they're bad in general. Hacker news is very special, sophisticated demographic. The recs are currently optimized for a more main stream audience. We get lots of feedback from users attesting to this. Certainly there is lots of room for improvement tho and that's why I want to hire so badly. We care a great deal about the product.

2) There's no bait and switch or anything underhanded going on with the gift cards. We get a certain amount when a user downloads an app, and we credit the user a certain percentage to work their way toward a reward. We need to expire point of inactive users to prevent an accounting nightmare. Many users are getting the cards every day.

Hope that clears things up. I certainly understand the skepticism, and again I welcome tough criticism.

I don't think you understand my criticism. App publishers are paying you to pay people to download their app. How can that be the basis for quality, objective recommendations?

Or let me try with a question: Explain how exactly your app helps people find the good app they need in the haystack of bad apps? If you don't do that, then this is an outright scam. People are paying you money for something. Please tell me what they are getting.

"Let's forget about getting acquired and build something with which to acquire!" Love that.

Reading that quote gave me a strong sense of déjà vu. Seems like there was a similar posting here maybe a couple years ago. Anyone remember this or am I crazy?

There have been many thread discussions on "why not just keep building it? Why is an exit always on the mind?" etc. Unsure if their was a specific post focusing on that aspect..Actually, to help other memories, I think it may have been AVC (or similar, quick google I believe its NOT avc / Fred Wilson) "Build an empire..not a ___" which discussed why you should build companies long-term.

The $100K is revenue, not profits. There are a lot of payouts that come out of the $100K.

Revenue of $100K is a lot less interesting if most of it is going towards iTunes gift certificates to convince people to continue using the application. Is this business at least profitable?

I found that user retention only went up marginally when the rewards were added. The main advantages are that is provides a good hook and a near-term business model.

And to answer your question: Yes, very much so. And growing.

Can anyone explain this business model to me? I find it very confusing, both in terms of how it works and why people sign up to this. This is not a criticism, as obviously it's brilliant and profitable, but rather an indication of my own limited knowledge 8)

Does it work like this?

1. Devs pay to feature their apps in this app 2. Users install the app and can like & install apps for points 3. After a certain amount of points (which seems huge) a user gets a free itunes gift voucher
