Idk man, from the outside anthropic looks a lot like openai with a cute redisgn and Amodei like Altman with a slightly more human face mask, the same media manipulation, the same vague baseless affirmations about "something big is coming and we can't even describe it but trust us we need more money"

Even just the fact that Amodei is publicly bringing up these issues, rather than doing behind closed doors deals with the Department of Defense (yes that's still the official name), is more than Altman has done for AI safety.

I would love to see a reference for that!

AFAIK the rounds shot to kills ratio is still north of ten thousand in most modern conflicts.

I’ve heard anecdotally that drone operators in Ukraine have a ratio of about ten drones per kill and rack up multiple kills per day every day. Supposedly the pilots “burn out” due to the psychological impacts.

And that's the end of democracy. One of the safe guards of democracy is a military that is trained to not turn against the citizens. Once a government has fully autonomous weapons its game over. They can point those weapons at the populous at the flip of the switch.

The parallel for this is when Rome changed from only recruiting citizens for their army to recruiting anyone who could pass the physical. They had no choice, and the new armies were much better at fighting. But the soldiers also didn’t have the same stake in the republic that voting citizens did.

Citizens were loyal to Rome. Soldiers were loyal to their commanders. If commanders wanted to launch rebellions, the soldiers would likely support them.

A commander who commands the loyalty of legions by convincing a handful of drone operators would be very dangerous for democracy.

What I don't get though is, why did the so-called "Department of War" target Anthropic specifically? What about the others, esp. OpenAI? Have they already agreed to cooperate? or already refused? I'm a bit underwhelmed tbh. Here is Anthropic's motto: "At Anthropic, we build AI to serve humanity’s long-term well-being." Why does Anthropic even deal with the Department of @#$%ing WAR? And what does Amodei mean by "defeat" in his first paragraph?

There was a time (1943?) when dealing with the US department of war meant serving for humanity's long-term well being.

So they work with the military to do anything except: Mass domestic surveillance and Fully autonomous weapons. This means that they are wiling to do mass foreign surveillance, domestic surveillance of individuals, autonomous weapons which are commanded by operators. Got it. Such a great and moral company.
