in case of macbooks even if something like usb port controller failed is most likely leads to board replacement as well so is high change that even if RAM is fine it could be useless because some $2 component failure

macbooks have modular ports. https://www.ifixit.com/News/116152/macbook-neo-is-the-most-r...

The MacBook Neo has modular ports. The rest of them don't. They may introduce them more widely in the next redesign but that remains to be seen.

While I somehow like the fact that Microsoft is trying to compete, their problem stays the same: There are too many people involved. - Nvidia - Mediatek - Microsoft - Windows team - Surface team - Marketing team - ... The main advantage of Apple is and will be, that they control the hardware AND the software / firmware completely and can make devices that feel completely cohesive. That's the reason Framework has an a…

Some people think that's an advantage.

I really hope for competition’s sake that Microsoft makes some reforms and cleans up Windows. Because us nerds like to say “the software is awful,” but really, the bones of Windows are not awful at all. It generally works well, it just takes a lot of work to get all of the BS out of your way. If you’re looking for open source friendly, just buy a Framework 13 Pro and be done with it. By the way, the other news from C…

No, Windows is awful. Closed source , buggy and filled with performance bottlenecks. Let's not even talk about the whole requirement for a Microsoft account, TPM or the fact that it's basically a spyware with ads. Why the hell would I want a Candy Crush Soda ad in my OS?!!!

But that’s what I’m saying: don’t equate ads and other BS with the architectural basis of the OS. The ads and the junk can be removed and I’m hoping Microsoft decides to clean those types of elements up as they face pressure from competitors.

Buggy and filled with performance bottlenecks? I don’t really agree with that. I would challenge a user in a blind test running full screen apps to tell the difference between the three major operating systems.

TPM isn’t something to get hung up on. I use it with Linux. Having some way to ensure system integrity is a feature of all major modern operating systems. The vast majority of people would never install an OS on their own, so this is an issue that doesn’t affect anyone relatively speaking. The average person only upgrades their Windows OS when they buy a new computer.

I do. I can take my laptop anywhere I want, for example to a coffee shop and run a coding model while eating a croissant without worrying about an internet connection, as the term local model implies.

And you can warm up the croissant by just placing it on the trackpad while you wait for the LLM to finish

Exactly, it's a built in reheater.

Are you pretending that Apple doesn't spam you with endless advertisements?

They don't. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't use a Mac.

They absolutely do. If you don't have a paid iCloud account, you get spammed urging you to upgrade for example. I really don't know why you feel so comfortable just blatanly lying when this is easily verifiable.

The Surface line is, HW-wise, very good IMHO. Too bad the software is awful. Thankfully the Linux Surface community is pretty strong. Proprietary Microsoft drivers don't make it easy, but we're getting there... https://github.com/linux-surface/surface-pro-x I'll buy another one if there's some commitment from Microsoft to be more open source friendly, but since this will never happen, they can keep their HW.

>Too bad the software is awful. I swear, people just live in their echochambers these days. Win 11 pro + WSL2 is literally the best, do it all OS you can get these days. Most peoples experience is with Windows home, which ironically is about as intrusive as Mac OS. When you get Windows Pro, you can disable all the annoying AI/Advertising shit that comes with Windows, and at that point, you get a system that is cleane…

Qubes OS enters the chat.

Spins up over a half-dozen disposable Windows qubes, variously behind VPN netvms, Tor netvms, and no netvms.

Qubes OS exits the chat.

Would love to see many more manufacturers read this as the slight taht it is from Microsoft and to follow Lenovos lead in making windows a paid add-on, going with a big Linux distro as the default. Maybe instead of hardware they should just stick to the knitting and deal with their quality issues around both the OS and the Office suite right now.

The whole forum here is bashing Windows for being thermal / performance disaster compared to apple products. I do not see how a laptop running Linux will evade the same fate (at least the bashing :).

On Qubes OS my P16 has abysmal battery life, but that's OK! I own my system, it is more secure than the two main slap fighter camps ITT, and the battery is really only a 30-min UPS to me (I always plug in). I never understood thin underpowered craptop enjoyers and their smug eight hour battery life aura, like... just use a pen and paper notebook at that point!

If they put Linux on it I'd buy it, but with Windows 11, no thanks.

They did put linux on it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Subsystem_for_Linux

Interix was better! I look back fondly on my Gentoo GNU/Windows desktop. Imagine a full first rate native POSIX subsystem, with equal footing to Win32. The things we lost over the decades, I could cry...

WSL is second rate, comparatively.

I do this nonstop using the UTM app in Apple Silicon virtualization, not QEMU, mode. I've done this from M2, M2 Max, and M5 machines, it basically wraps the hypervisor.framework (or the current name) and i had used Asahi on an M1 before that. With UTM wrapping hypervisor.framework, i have a complete fullscreen desktop running Linux (i use fedora earlier but Arch the last several months) with full graphics as if it we…

Are you able to play Steam games?

You can play 64-bit macOS Steam games using ... Steam for macOS. This works fine (at least until they kill Rosetta2), though you are still translating x86.

And most Windows Steam games (32- or 64-bit) via Crossover. (Expect about half the frame rate of a native ARM/Metal port at the same settings.)

But you may be asking whether you can run Proton well in a Linux VM. I think it would depend on having a good Vulkan implementation that works well with a hardware GPU, so I expect the answer is yes with an eGPU, no with the internal GPU.
