Accepting the megacorp euphemisms without critique ("product tips") is how enshittification festers.
I've not seen any evidence that these were ads and not "tips". Ads implies someone was paying for them. Promoting internal product features is not the same thing - if it was then every piece of software that shows a tip would be an ad product, and would be regulated as such.

By my understanding of the term, Netflix can most definitely advertise Netflix shows on its own platform, a flyer that a barber hangs on a public bulletin board is an advertisement, and the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile is advertising hotdogs when it drives through my town. Do you not consider these things to be advertisements?

They’re also developers and probably do care. I’d wager, as always, someone in management with bonus targets to hit probably told them to do it anyway. :/

When they added this it was extremely useful - it signaled that you could afford an iPhone. It was really easy to delete, yet people not only didn't, but they would go out of their way to respond from the iPhone just so that they could plausibly have this status symbol on their email.
That is also an advert, just a personal one.

It won’t unless you ask it to. It will review your PRs and it will create PRs if you don’t turn those things off, I believe, but it won’t edit or modify any PR. My employer pushes copilot quite hard and I’ve never seen copilot do anything without me telling it to act in some way.
Thank you for clarifying. It’s hard to get facts nowadays, people are just claiming whatever.

If Microsoft is willing to put ads into your PRs via Copilot like this, imagine what they could put into your codebase itself with Copilot. Or what Microsoft could do, run, install, etc on/from your computer while running their Copilot agents. This is the same company that puts ads in your start menu and reinserts them with Windows updates even if you manually removed them.
Spent yesterday pruning dependencies in a project. Cut half of them and everything still worked. Makes you wonder how much stuff we pull in without thinking about it. Same thing with AI-generated PRs honestly, one bad suggestion and it ships.

I actually like the Claude's Co-Authored-By: line very much. Even in my personal repositories, where I'm the sole author and the sole reader, I would like to know if my older commit I'm looking at was vibe coded, implying possibly lower quality or weird logical issues with the code.
So, my personal rule is: if I implemented a feature with Claude, I'll ask it to commit the code and it will add Co-Authored-By. If I made the change manually, I'll commit it myself.

Their mistake was editing it into the text bodies, rather than making it a separate element of the page. No doubt they were trying to inhibit adblockers but it’s so much worse a problem for them this way, because they’re presenting an ad in the voice and userpic of the account that made the post.
