Why does being a top AI researcher so often come with this philosophical bent you describe?

Because they can afford it, they are very sought after. And smart people usually have moral convictions. I know for some people on this website it's hard to understand, but not everything in life is about $$$

> And smart people usually have moral convictions.

Dumb people have moral convictions. Smart people see the nuance.

Not everything on Wikipedia is true, but the parts Elon Musk hates most are probably true.

Well, you yiyrself did not provide any sources for asserting the argument that some of what is on Wikipedia is false

Zoning is one area that’s better in space. Not really, though? The idea that Earth-based data centers need to be built in populated, developed areas is indeed dumb, yet it seems to be inexplicably baked into everyone's assumptions. In particular, the small discrete data centers that Musk wants to launch could go anywhere on Earth. They could be powered by local PV arrays and batteries, they can be cooled by smaller r…

The problem is that you need humans to run datacenters, and so that puts ceilings on how far away from humans you can put them without the humans no longer being willing to commute there. And the cost of building all the infra to support humans living in an area that humans are not already populating is enormous.

Well, evidently you don't need humans to run datacenters, if we're talking about launching them into LEO!

Here's an idea, let's do this instead: we put them in the desert, or on boats or zeppelins or whatever, and we pretend they're in space. If anybody asks, those fuckers are in space, man. Computin' in the cosmos.

I think the problem for xAI is that it can really only hire two types of researchers - people who are philosophically aligned with Elon, and people who are solely money-motivated (not a judgment). But frontier AI research is a field with a lot of top talent who have strong philosophical motivation for their work, and those philosophies are often completely at odds with Elon. OpenAI and Anthropic have philosophical ni…

> people who are solely money-motivated (not a judgment). Honestly, we should judge. There should be judgment for people who are solely money motivated and making the world a worse place. I know, blah blah privilege, something something mouths to feed. Platitudes to help the rich assholes sleep at night. If you are wealthy and making stuff that hurts people, you are a piece of shit and should be called out, simple.

I like how some in this thread are telling their anecdotes about how shitty the company is from when they were in, or interviewing with, xAI. I mean, thanks for your input guys, but how do you go through life without having a moral backbone?

“Here’s my story from that time I had an interview with IG Farben…”

That's only because autism is common amongst those groups and you can't build anything worthwhile these days without a lot of autism.

I don't believe that for a second. More likely, infosec tends to attract more results-oriented personalities. To generalize, "who cares what you look like as long as you're good?" As a consequence of that, infosec tends to be a lot more welcoming than other groups I've been around. As long as you act nicely, people generally don't care if you're man, women, both, neither, or a gay horse. And it seems like there's bee…

This is the first time I hear someone equate furries and trans with “results-oriented personalities.” [1] Not saying they necessarily are not, but it’s finding correlation where there absolutely isn’t one just to disagree with actual evidence.

Yeah, I’m gonna go with Occam’s razor on this one.

1: where is the trans furries representation in senior management and other “results-oriented” fields?

I'm not arguing anything other than the fact that Wikipedia is biased. Though I will say it's beyond argument that geographic ancestry has an effect on IQ on a statistical group level (the reasons for this are what's debated), and that IQ is the best measurement of G that we have.

Okay but you need to… actually present these arguments. Right now you’re stating your position and then affirming it as fact and expecting everyone to trust you.

I already gave you two large meta-analyses and more on the first point along with a and as far as the second goes in the field of psychology that's as established as 2+2=4 is in the math world. If you really want to research that yourself go ahead; I don't feel like I should need to waste my time.

The pleasure people get at seeing Elon's companies failing is astounding.

I'm trans. This man has actively and intentionally made life harder for myself and my loved ones. So yes, I'm going to enjoy any news that weakens his ability to do that, and no, I won't apologize for it.

Technically, it's the zeroth time because I never even implied that. I said that the field itself is results-oriented. You usually can't get very far in the career without demonstrating competency at it. Where plenty of other fields had strong unspoken rules of "...as long as you fit in", this one's traditionally been comparatively open to talented people even when they don't look and act like everyone else.

Ali think all of Elon’s companies have an Elon problem: he’s so polarizing he’s limiting the talent pool to choose from. I’m here for it because I don’t care for the man and want him to fail… but yeah that seems clear to me that his polarizing antics are costing his companies.
