Something I don't quite understand is why the price of a used dedicated server is impacted by anything beyond electricity and land prices. It's not like the RAM gets replaced by new one every now and then. That's old RAM chip that's been bought years ago (and I believe largely amortized by now).

Is there any collocation space from which you can actually buy and own a physical machine without going there, and pay only the rent and traffic? I miss calling a server "mine".

But this is my point. People say "unregulated market" and assume that means reverting to feudalism, but what it actually means is just... less regulation.

You should try speaking to the Libertarian bros.

The libertarians get a lot of things wrong, but generally they would agree that it's not a real market if people are getting coerced.

I'm not convinced that the system they want to build would actually protect people, though.

You're not paying for the used server; youre paying for the used server and the replacement; thats how you can grow a business without assuming huge capex investments upfront.

I think its still common for colo spaces to have installation services for shipped-in hardware. You buy a server, configure it and ship it to the DC.

>All it'll take is one company to go bust, oracle for example, for the whole thing to deflate Provided that of course, the US administration will be incorruptible enough to not bail out these tech companies with taxpayer money when they do eventually fail. But when you see the connection between Larry Ellison and Trump, you realize the whole "free market competition" is a scam for suckers. Always has been, just that…

> Provided that of course, the US administration will be incorruptible enough to not bail out these tech companies with taxpayer money when they do eventually fail. I'd love them to try that because virtually no one on any part of the political spectrum would get behind that besides the most corrupted and soulless ghouls masquerading as politicians

> besides the most corrupted and soulless ghouls masquerading as politicians

Considering how many politicians in congress are influenced by corporate lobbyists and AIPAC, I think the situation is much more bleak

I just started the process of migrating to them yesterday. They are still very affordable. But a bit less. I'm estimating that our quite lean GCP setup cost is going to be cut to about 20-25% when I'm done. So, it doesn't affect my decision to go with them literally yesterday morning. It's all a bit barebones and primitive but I don't mind. I spent yesterday tweaking some ansible scripts with codex to setup stuff lik…

I always found that compliance issue with encrypted drives a bit funny. The provider has the keys. So, the drives encryption has no practical application. The drives in, say, GCP aren't even real drives, the blocks are chunked over a distributed pool of storage- you can't just grab a drive and walk away with an OS or a data volume, you'd just get random junk. - So what's the encryption going to do? I guess it's harde…

You're one of those that's going to laugh at the idea of "verifiable cloud" that Apple and others are pushing? How dare you stand in the way of AI everywhere!

It depends. If you're running a business from home is where my local insurance draws the line and you need additional professional insurance. You should be able to do this hassle free, and you probably can get away with it, but you may find yourself in a grey area later. It's just one of many types of red tape that stiffles innovation.

That's a tricky one. Is working from home considered running a business? What if you have formed an LLC that you work for and your company is the one hired? That's technically a business running from your address, yet is nothing different than what would be considered WFH.

> Is working from home considered running a business?

It actually is in some jurisdictions, even if of course no one cares (except of course insurances looking for reasons to refuse a claim).

1. There's no meaningful European competition. 2. Trump is making everyone scared to use US hosting. So they're leveraging for extra profits.

That is indeed what the comment seems to be implying. "No meaningful European competition" might be a bit too strong. There are many great EU hosters. OVH, Netcup, Scaleway, Strato, Ionos, Exoscale, to name a few. But Hetzner is probably the biggest and has the best name recognition. Doesn't hurt that their prices are among the best in the industry

These are all really quite small though.

Revenue (EUR): Ionos 1.5bn, OVH 1bn, Hetzner 0.5bn, Strato <0.2bn, Netcup (incl. parent) <0.1bn, Scaleway <0.1bn, Exoscale <0.01bn

Can you use less inflammatory language and be more critical in your thought? Your point, if there is any, is drowned by your lack of command of constructive discussion. Who are you to decide what is tangible and what is not? That’s my whole point. GPU prices are still not crazy on a $ / performance scale, especially if you do a rough chart of it over time. Certainly there are carve outs, the 5090 is still hard to get…

You keep trying to tone police others while making downright deranged statements with no basis of reality. Maybe if you touched a bit of grass the answers to your outright gaslighting wouldn't be "inflammatory".

Deranged? My thesis is that many have tried different ways to solve supply and demand issues and usually on average the market solves it best. It’s not perfect, it’s not always the right tool but on average it’s pretty good.

If that’s deranged wow I might not need to be the one touching grass. Let’s backup, you’re the one saying I am parroting. I asked you how you would solve it. You ignored that and went further down some hole of prices being imbalanced since 2012 and not being a pilot and then jumping to crypto and nft.

None of that is constructive. That’s not what gaslighting is. You’re going off on strange tangents and have yet to provide a solution to the problem. I already said it, the market is not perfect but it’s pretty good at solving these types of problems. If you have a better way I would love to hear it. I don’t believe arbitrarily taxing specific industries is a solution because there are always second order effects that you cannot plan for. And also who gets to decide who can buy equipment or not.

I am not policing you. Just pointing out this is not in the spirit of constructive dialogue and you should work on it! I am generally tired of folks like yourself not adding anything while raging that others need to touch grass. I noticed that’s a common insult with folks like yourself.

I guess we have to get creative again.

I actually think you're right here. Resource constraints have often helped me come up with stuff that I'm actually proud of.

Absolutely. It's why I find working on a microcontroller with 1KB of memory so much more rewarding than, say, a Raspberry Pi.

The post seems to indicate this is just for VPSs, which doesn't seem true, the email I just received from Hetzner mentions price increases for dedicated servers too. The ones I'm affected by seemingly: Product -> previous price -> New price as of 1 April 2026 EX42-NVMe (FSN1) -> € 49.65 -> € 51.13 AX41 (FSN1) -> € 49.73 -> € 51.22 AX41-NVMe (FSN1) -> € 49.73 -> € 51.18 Server Auction -> € 65.22 -> € 67.18 Still cheap…

I also thought it was only going to impact fixed prices services such as VPS / Cloud etc. But I'm pretty pissed off to have just got an email about dedicated "server auction" products. We agreed a price by auction, and they are putting it up.. Grrr
