I'd be less annoyed by accidentally touching the touchbar all the time if it were positioned at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top of the keyboard. Hey, Apple: why not just lose the touch bar and make the whole screen taller and touch sensitive instead, huh?

I'd be fine with the bottom of the screen being touch sensitive or something, specifically where it wouldn't align with the keyboard, but they can't even get their anti-glare coating to not erode permanently when you get some finder grease on it. Not optimistic that a touchscreen would be done very well on macbooks.

You might as well save $25 a week until september and buy the m2 pro that comes stock with more memory and storage when they inevitably update the 14 inch and sell it for $2000. Better yet, wait 6 months and buy the refurbished m2 pro for $1700...

Buy $1700 worth of Apple stock and hold it for 12 months instead.

100% agree. The last generation of MacBook pros with intel processors were virtually unusable for zoom calls or any intensive processing power tasks.

Companies always solve their own problems first. Apple uses WebEx, which is probably the most piggy of the videoconferencing solutions that I use in terms of cpu and memory.

Am I the only one who just ignored the touchbar and didn't take it as a personal affront?

If it was an addition it would have been fine. Instead it replaced the escape key and all the function keys.

This hasn't been my experience. How many CPU cores we talking here? Haven't really run into Zoom perf problems since running it on a dual-core 2015 i5 MBP.

Since 2019, I have been using Zoom multiple times per day on an early 2019 and a last 2019 Intel-based Macbook. Both are 6-core Intel i7 based. One with 16GB, one with 32GB.

Roughly speaking, Zoom eats a single CPU core or so. This is far from ideal but the machine remains plenty usable. No insane fan noise, etc. No problems doing pairing sessions, etc.

This is not a defense of Apple, Zoom, or Intel for that matter. Not really a fan of the latter two myself. It's just interesting that your experience is "virtually unusable" while mine is "fine" -- I'm curious what the difference is.

I get what you're saying, and there are definitely smaller changes packed in here, but my point is that Apple's performance crown is looking mighty easy to usurp right about now. M2 isn’t intended to have high performance. It’s intended to have a high perf-power ratio, as they said. Often it gets the performance too, but that’s kind of like a lucky break.

Still M1 Pro/Max/Ultra single core performance is basically same as M1. It's not good sign for M2 Pro/whatever's single core performance. It's fine for M2.

Asahi linux has most things working, except the accelerated GPU. Just in the last week or so a triangle was rendered, so progress is has been made. Sadly while apple has 128 bit wide memory on the low end (66-100GB/sec on the mac mini and mba), 256 bit wide (200GB/sec), 512 bits wide (400GB/sec), and 1024 bits wide (800GB/sec). Massive memory bandwidth is for GPU, so not matter unless you utilize iGPU.

It's not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but if you must: - 8GB on the Air is not the same as it'd 8GB on the HP, macOS + Apple silicon's memory efficiency means it can do more with less. - The new M2 Air has a better screen by resolution, size, and by brightness (400 vs 500 nits). I wasn't able to find colour gamut specs for the HP Spectre. - By all metrics battery wise the M2 Air handily beats the Spectre.…

Wish I could tell my young adult self to do that in the past. If I'd bought Apple stock instead of a new mac in '93 and kept it, I'd be worth about $3M

They are on the cusp on turning Macs into annual upgrades - with meaningful performance upgrades tied to the OS, just like they've done for a decade with the A series / iOS releases. This is firing on all cylinders. The organizational structure and performance is a marvel for this.

What would dripping the ball look like at this point in the game? Mediocre annual upgrades?

I would expect that even mediocre annual upgrades wouldn't actually be a short-term business failure, as the vast bulk of sales are probably 3+ year upgrades.

It would be a marketing failure though, and sustained would translate into a longer-term business failure.
