#632IIRC, high-resolution thermal infrared cameras are ITAR controlled-- which means they are not available for consumer applications above an abysmal resolution (something like 320x280). Public safety like this seems like a great impetus to do what was done for GPS, and declassify this crucial (and now really quite mature) technology for the general public.
FLIR will sell you cryo-cooled cameras domestically as well.

#634This is definitely not a case of someone jumping out in the road, as was previously reported. Sure, jaywalking at night is a bad idea, but this is exactly the type of thing an automated driving system should catch and avoid
I thought whole initial response from the police was weird. They went out of their way to basically say she jumped out in front of the car, and that the accident was unavoidable. They even told us that the women was homeless, which I viewed as a subtle way to hint that maybe she wasn’t in her right mind. If that's not very strange language to use for a public servant describing a video that shows a fatal vehicle-vs-pedestrian accident, I don't know what is.
I'm not in the US so I don't know, but people in another thread were making comments that that is often how it is handled in the US, the crash victim is blamed somehow. It was implied by one person that police want to avoid paperwork.

#635As for this accident, I think in time it will be shown in time that while machines can make mistakes, they make fewer mistakes than humans. Six years ago I heard that CSX (a major rail line in the U.S.) was actively pursuing autonomous trains. I thought the idea was horrible, until the programmer working on the project informed me that machines guiding trains have been proven to make fewer mistakes than humans guiding trains. It keeps the human element of error out of the equation.
There is a certain amount of fear these events generate, but did you notice that the same level of media coverage was not given for the dozens of similar accidents that happened in the past 24 hours with non-autonomous vehicles?

I see a lot of people who cross the street without looking. I definitely don’t get it. I constantly check everywhere even when I clearly have the right of way. But that’s how people are.

Also - the car is driving way too fast.
I did some driving tonight and paid close attention to when I naturally slowed down - and albeit I'm probably on the higher curve of good drivers in that I don't tailgate, drive the speed limit and generally slow much slower than the speed limit when conditions are poor (fog/rain/snow, night, slick/wet roads, near curves/hills where I can't see the road). I noticed that many of the times I naturally slowed down on the roads here I slowed considerably under the speed limit by 10 to 20 MPH in some areas. It seems this Uber SDV is generally going as fast as it is possibly allowed to regardless of what it can see.

No kidding. This might be a somewhat controversial opinion, but I think the elephant in the room here is this general "pedestrian has right of way" notion. It's much easier for pedestrians to watch out for and evade cars than the other way around, and yet we seem to insist the opposite? That seems rather backwards and contrary to the laws of physics.
