The press says Sky voice is indistinguishable from Scarlett Johansson, but I hear zero similarities to her voice in any of her films. Besides, of course, that it is a standard-issue unaccented white anglo female.

Sounds only like Scarlett Johansson to me. I watch a lot of TV and film and can't think of a single person it sounds like other than Scarlett Johansson. I think the same would be true for most people not in the US. The tweets (one referencing Scarlett Johansson by name, and one from Sam just saying "her" are also confirming my bias here.) In all honesty, I thought this was just another thing AI vacuumed up without th…

Can you post a link to the audio you think sounds like her? I’m very curious

Genuine question; Why in the world would one expect the more charitable scenario?

It's just a best practice that serves as a healthy counterbalance to cognitive biases, that might otherwise urge us to convict without evidence. It's not necessarily what will prove true at the end of the day but I think we owe people the presumption of innocence.

Yes, you owe people that.

No, you do not owe "corporations, especially those with a tendency, incentive, and history of being ruthless in this way."

Wise up, people.

Which part of that is illegal? Because I don't see anything.

It's in the very article > He compared Johansson’s case to one brought by the singer Bette Midler against the Ford Motor Company in the 1980s. Ford asked Midler to use her voice in ads. After she declined, Ford hired an impersonator. The U.S. appellate courts ruled in Midler’s favor, indicating her voice was protected against unauthorized use.

So if I happen to sound like Tom Hanks, anyone recording me in passing would be breaking the law? How does anyone see that as reasonable?

> The actress did impersonate Her though. Did she? The article claims that: 1. Multiple people agree that the casting call mentioned nothing about SJ/her 2. The voice actress claims she was not given instructions to imitate SJ/her 3. The actress's natural voice sounds identical to the AI-generated Sky voice I don't personally think it's anywhere near "identical" to SJ's voice. It seems most likely to me that they not…

Also sam had a one word tweet: “her.” So it looks like there was something going on.

It’s an obvious comparison to make for the technology, I don’t think it was meant as “it sounds like ScarJo”

Which one are we saying sounds like Johansson? I'm talking about the TTS voice in the app, is everyone else talking about the multimodal voice from the 4o demos? Also, whether they *intended* to replicate Her and whether they *did* in the end are very different.

This one: https://youtu.be/vgYi3Wr7v_g?feature=shared&t=22 compare it to: https://youtu.be/GV01B5kVsC0?feature=shared&t=125

Are you using this as an argument about how similar they are? The voice sounds distinctly different, no problem discerning between the two.

I think we owe people outside of a commercial environment the presumption of innocence and benefit of the doubt. But we owe profit-seeking corporations (or their officers) neither, and the assumption should be that they are simply amorally doing whatever maximizes profit. As soon as someone hangs their shingle out there as a business, our presumptions should change.

Kind of concerning to see so much sketchbag behaviour from possibly the top AI company so consistently. Sure brings a lot of confidence in the future and sad that they can get away with it and still succeed because of the tech and their big names.

It feels like it took years before people started hating Google and Tesla, but these guys wasted very little time pretending to be good.

Do I still pay for and use them? Unfortunately yes, but I won't spend a second defending them or thinking they are trying to do anything remotely good, safe or ethical. Once things settle and hopefully someone else takes over, I can move my money elsewhere.

voice imitation is illegal?

Copying likeness can be.

Not for commercial purposes and not in California. Otherwise you’d just hire an impersonator and never pay for celebrity endorsement.

Hiring a different voice artist might show that they didn't use deepfake technology to imitate Johansson’s voice, but it absolutely doesn't prove that the voice isn't an imitation and one for which they would have been liable under existing law.

voice imitation is illegal?

Discussed a lot in the last thread on the issue, but, yes, imitation of celebrity voices voices for commercial purposes can violate the right of publicity (also known as the right of personality) in many US jurisdictions, including California (this is a matter of state statute and/or common law, not federal law.)
