In the second Trump term, the rest of the world is justified in viewing the US as the kind of country which will, for the foreseeable future, periodically elect this kind of kakistocratic leadership. The lesson is finally sinking in, in ways that it did not during the first Trump term. People wanted to believe that is was a one-off. During the first Trump term the argument could be made that it wasn't, but it was deb…

Europe is just as susceptible to right wing populist takeover. Already happened in the eu for example Hungary.

Not wrong, but "right wing populist" are your words. I did not use them. What I described above is not specifically "right wing populist", just kakistocratic. And the rational response from EU and others is the same regardless of who is and who isn't "right wing populist", EU members included.

Being "right wing populist" won't change that response. The caveat is that populists are not very rational.

Besides sibling comment, see "The Spies Who Launched America’s Industrial Revolution":

> Long before the United States began accusing other countries of stealing ideas, the U.S. government encouraged intellectual piracy to catch up with England’s technological advances. According to historian Doron Ben-Atar, in his book,[1] Trade Secrets, “the United States emerged as the world's industrial leader by illicitly appropriating mechanical and scientific innovations from Europe.”

If you think those actions are not illegal I'm stopping to reply, this is clearly just ragebait.

TIL enforcing laws is actually illegal

There are many cases of law enforcement being imprisoned for shooting people while on duty. It is well established that enforcing laws does not give you carte blanche to shoot people

it's not comparable, not by a long shot; the level of insider dealing, corporate theft, and corruption, is nothing like what's in the US (that is until Trump 2.0)

Han chauvinism is comparable to Manifest Destiny across multiple dimensions. AFAICT, both groups believe(d), despite initial conditions, their authority is pre-ordained and they are/were taking the nation to it's rightful place in the world/history. Other folk they encounter(ed) are bit-players and don't have the same rights, privileges, qualities or shared destiny.

I agree with you on that.

My "not comparable" comment was in regards to my post about the rules, not specifically the "you're not Han" issue.

Ok, so you are a poor peasant (erm farmer) in rural China with a 9th grade education (the compulsory minimum in China) in say a poor province like Jiangxi, there are around 500 million of you, what’s your easier path to the middle class than if you were in the USA?

move to the city? The delivery app guys can earn a decent living. no education required.

Delivery guys in China are not considered middle class.

The stated objective of the Alberta Prosperity Project is for Alberta to be a sovereign nation. They're not looking to trade Ottawa for Washington. Of course it is a loony idea, but that is what they're pushing.

you can listen to their purveyors on various podcasts and the like. the are still actively pushing to try to get the US onboard at the same time. you can also look to crimea as an example, independence and annexed by russia happened within a day or two

The question the group will ask is: "Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?"

This is a bad argument because you're assuming that the US needs to compete with China on EVs or that not competing results in somehow "losing". A car is a car, at the end of the day. Frankly, the best car is no car, but I'll leave that for some other discussion around transit. China has gone all-in on EVs because over the years they smartly built up the world's best rare earth refining capabilities and immense manuf…

>China has gone all-in on EVs because over the years they smartly built up the world's best rare earth refining capabilities If by that you mean they propped up their industry and undercut everyone else until they went out of business, then increased prices to a point just below where it would be profitable for someone else to try again? Then use their monopoly position to further their interests in other sectors? Ed…

Yes, that’s mostly what I mean. I think it was a smart strategy. The world is addicted and dependent on their manufactured goods, and while the US tariff regime has been a bit haphazardly implemented, it’s ultimately the right move if you want to protect domestic industry.

Mexico recently applied 50% tariffs on Chinese imports. Of course other countries without a trade deal also were slapped with tariffs, but they were broadly targeted at China because Mexico’s president is handling Trump much better than, say, Carney.

I suppose you realize the people running those manufacturing companies won't be hurt much at all, everyone who scrapes by trying to making a living work for them will hurt a lot when they get fired.

The vast majority of US auto jobs have already been lost to automation yet I don't hear you asking for those to come back in exchange for twice as expensive cars. This is these companies own fault. These companies have grown cozy rent seeking with little competition and have completely missed the electrification of cars as a result. Cheaper cars will hurt those workers, but all of society will be better off when one…

Nothing gets cheaper. The bullwhip effect everyone kept evangelizing never happened. Between the housing crisis and the covid stimulus I’m not sure why anyone ever expected things to get cheaper, or expects it today.

>The US has turned into something much more vindictive and unpredictable, including threatening to invade Canada. The thing about China is that they are basically hard on the up slope of their advancement as a society/economy/nation, just like US was post ww2. > US on the other hand, has flatlined to the point where we think stuff like trans athletes in sports are a drastic enough reason to elect a president who is a convicted Felon. This is very one-sided and unfair. The trans stuff is indicative of a larger social movement. For example, in the U.S., it would be illegal to use IQ tests to hire employees while in China, that's practiced. China is far more meritocratic. The…

China definitely relies on ideology quite a bit, the difference is the government controls that ideology because they understand correctly that the people can't be trusted.
