#612The board seems truly incompetent here and looking at the member list it doesn't seem very surprising. A competent board should have asked for legal and professional advice before taking a drastic step like this. Instead the board thought it was a boxing match and tried to deliver a knockout punch before the market closes with blunt language. This might be the most incompetent board for an organisation of this size.
The major investors whose money is on the line and who are funding the venture, Microsoft, Sequoia, and Khosla, were not given advanced warning or any input in to how this would impact their investment.
I would definitely say the board screwed up.

Yea, I feel like this is another traitorous eight moment. I want a second (first being Anthropic?) OpenAI split. Having Anthropic, OpenAI, SamGregAi, Stability and Mistral and more competing on foundation models will further increase the pressure to open source. It seems like there is a lull in returns to model size, if that's the case then there's even less basis for having all the resources under a single umbrella.
I don't think anyone has reported an end to scaling laws yet.

Sam is not just the darling of tech media. He literally 1. Met with every major head of state except for Xi and Putin. He is the face of AI, not just for OpenAI, but for the entire world. The entire AI industry would hate for this to happen. 2. Lead a company from 2 billion valuation to nearly 80 billion in a year. There is no precedent in startup history to get rid of a CEO at this stage.
You seem to massively overestimate “the whole world” on their familiarity with anything about tech. Even leaving aside the billions who aren’t reading the news - I vividly remember the time a few years ago in Australia when a casual friend, recently out of high school, was shocked to learn that Microsoft makes the Xbox.
