The A14 Air just came out and has a brand new CPU. The Pros have much fancier displays, lower pen latency, etc. Subjectively, in most typical use, the Pros already feel like they have more available cycles than iOS apps have got around to soaking up.

It may be possible the variations are due to differences in the thermal environment when the tests were conducted. I would expect the pro and mini to beat the air as they should have better thermals, but that may only show up over longer term tests and environmental factors could win out in shorter tests. Just a theory.

Nothing they did this week made it more unrepairable that it already was. Newest Macbooks already had CPUs and memory soldered in to the motherboard for quite some time. I have the 16” MacBook Pro. It doesn’t throttle and will happily run at max boost for tens of minutes.

#607I've been holding onto my late 2013 15" MacBook Pro for almost 7 years now and it's wild to see it get absolutely out-spec'd by the MacBook Air. It's been a long time, but I've always convinced myself that I'm not missing out on that big of a processor improvement. I do a lot of audio work with it, but even then it doesn't always feel like a slow experience.
That MacBook has to be one of the best computers Apple has ever created. Mine has lasted this long with non-stop daily usage for years and travel around different countries.

Not exactly. You can check the clock speeds: https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/4620493.gb5 Up to 5050MHz is stock behavior for the 5950X and it's using standard DDR4 3200 memory.
Yet it still makes it very clear: a properly implemented ARM core can easily bury an X86 of equivalent size because of inherent advantage of not having to pay interest on 40 years of technical debt in the ISA.

The results seem a little weird but if remotely true then these machines are going to sell like cup cakes. Why would anyone (who is not forced) buy an Intel PC laptop when these are available and priced as competitive as they are?
They are not priced competitive. Cheapest macbook air starts from $999. Cheapest Dell Inspiron starts from $319.
