I'm on 660TIs in SLI which are not the newest horse in the stable and can run just about anything out maxed (16x AA etc.) @ 1080p. You won't need this card unless you're going multi monitor and / or retina level.

You can't, plus the fact that lot of games don't work well with SLI.

Work well, or show significant performance gains?

Because I haven't found a single game that doesn't work or has SLI specific bugs. Crossfire however....

My dual 670s handles 5760x1200 pretty well.

Am I the only one that hates the term "retina"? Just give a resolution. It is way more meaningful than pointless apple magic lingo.

Perhaps 200+ dpi or the equivalent in metric.

Yes, and thus the cards are always racing one another.

If the cards display frames as they're available, they end up with uneven display times, which is a quite jarring visual effect. If they VSync they end up with the standard VSync issues where occasional slow frames are difficult to handle. Both are undesirable traits for VR. An output buffer naturally adds latency, which is also undesirable.

The card-race issue is called "micro stuttering" and you can read some outdated information about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_stuttering .

AMD cards in Crossfire used to be notorious for this effect, but they've since added an adaptive frame-rate limiter (forcing fast frames to delay, like VSync but not bound to the display's refresh) which helps.

The Dodge Viper is probably a better example, as it's a totally custom chassis, body, etc. The GT500 still shares a LOT with a production Mustang, and al the economies of scale that imparts. It's also producded in very high quantities, 5000+ yearly. They're making money or they wouldn't buiild that many.

Even better example is Bugatti Veyron, fastest production car in the world. Some analysts say that company is losing over $6m on every car sold, despite $2m price tag. Only 400 cars were sold to date.

I don't track gaming GPU requirements that much, but this strikes me as past high end. Is this even useful for gaming, or is it really aimed at doing crypto, cryptocurrency mining, simulations, etc?

The thing to note about this card is that it's a dual-GPU card - two chips with some sort of intra-card PCIE bus between them. You could get equivalent gaming performance by buying two of the GTX 780 Ti for about $1500. That level of performance is roughly what you want if you want to game at 4k resolutions at 60 FPS, so there are gaming applications for this card, even if it falls into "insanely high-end". The niche for this sort of card is in mini-ITX and similarly small computers, where there isn't enough room for a pair of cards and the builder wants "throwing money away" levels of performance.

That said, the selling point of the Titan cards is that their GPUs don't have the same restrictions put on their general-purpose compute performance as the standard gamer cards. NVIDIA locks this performance on their geforce cards in order to protect their lucrative GPGPU business, so this is really more of an entry-level card for scientific computing and other applications.

Cryptocurrency mining would be an obvious application, but a quirk of NVIDIA and AMD's differing architectures means that AMD cards are vastly more powerful at the specific functions needed to mine cryptocoins.

Personally I find having a higher frame rate in faster paced game is far more important than having a diagonal line be perfectly smooth. In the middle of a game you'd never be concerned with how perfect the image looks.

The point of this card is there are some people who want both.

But going from nearly perfectly smooth lines to perfectly smooth lines should not be a profitable market. Nobody will notice the difference during any real gameplay. You can already do great anti aliasing so why would someone pay $1000+ more for a 10% or less gain.

Wow, I bet the cost / benefit ratio on this one is not so great for most applications. Just wait a year till a minutely pared-down version is available for 10% the price.

I will eat a shoe if this is available in 12 months for $300.

An iPhone is a good example. Real life example: my wife bought an iPhone, I was impressed and bought one, which led to me buying a MacBook to do dev work (and because "hey, they do make good machines"), which led to a whole house full of Macs and various Apple gear. Because they made what I thought was a decent phone at the time, they sold some other gear as a result.

Assuming the phrase "halo product" derives from "halo effect", I'm confused about how my example isn't the quintessential definition. 1. Buy iPhone. 2. Enjoy iPhone. 3. "Hey, I'll bet Apple's other products are pretty good, too." 4. Profit for Apple.

Disagreement on the definition, or poorly explained personal example?

(EDIT: now that I think about it, our first iPods were the halo product that made me discard old Apple biases that I was carrying from the 90s.)
