The "vote with your wallet" mantra holds here. Don't buy it.

It's a good first step, but this also seems ripe for regulation. If I buy something – tangible or not – I should be able to sell it on. Period. (Barring other regulatory burdens. I think it's reasonable that you cannot legally sell on prescription drugs, for example.)

Indeed, the whole "you're not buying a game, you are buying a license to the game" is a bad argument that is used to justify not allowing resale. The only party it benefits are the companies, not the people.

It also kills the joy of discovering old games in the attic when you're moving and sitting down and playing a bit, or passing on games to your kids.

in the attic, you discover your grandpa's steam account scribbled onto a piece of paper with the password.

You try to log in, but turns out you need biometrics to access the library!

I have 9000+ games on Steam and many others on EA, Ubisoft etc. Value is zero.

I recently catalogued and valued my physical game collection across multiple consoles. Value is over £10,000 and that value will only go up as time passes.

I wish I could be angry about this, but the time has passed. 20+ years ago I refused to buy the Steam version of Civilization 5 and waited for my physical boxed copy. Turns out it was just a CD with a Steam code and some cached content. I was so angry. I'm over it now, but I felt the need to share.

Civ 5 is from 2010 :)

In the current state of things you will more likely see regulation passing that bans reselling of any type of game ever.

> I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further

I tentitively came back to gaming after 20 years, and can not believe the crap current gamers put up with. Maybe it was a slowly boiling frog, but I'm still stunned at the Darth Vader like dealings happening now.

I'm not even mad at the gaming companies, it's the punters that need a slap. The companies are just following market economics, you can't blame them. The people bending over though ... Jesus, have some self-respect.

How will the seller know you opted out for that particular reason?

in a perfect world, they look at their sales and notice that the games that are only available with no physical media are selling poorly

I have a hard time believing that even in a perfect world this would work because for that particular game A you have no reference. How will you compare it to sales of game B that also ships a a physical medium. Granted they can figure this out, next is the question of how much loss in sales they are willing to take for the benefit of not producing a medium (no sleeve design, no production, no distribution).

A PS5 Bluray can hold 100GB of data, sure some AAA titles are in excess of 100GB, although that is still 100GB that the player doesn't have to download, plus they enable re-sell-ability and partially maintain the status quo of "owning" a title.

It's weird to say this, but BD (including 4K UHD BD) is actually really old tech. Sony was talking about quad-layer discs back before they deleted the mandatory disc caddy from the draft BD spec! OK, practically speaking nobody had their hands on a quad-layer disc until BDXL in the mid-2010s, but even then that's still old. As for why nobody's made a higher-capacity disc... well, they did. It was even an industry sta…

Those at least are able to be resold, which is a large step above a one-time-use license key.

How much of that 100GB is actually optimized usage? I suspect that a hard cap on the size of the game would lead to a better quality product. The size inflation of games has literally gone insane. I was looking at my Steam library and Tekken 7 was taking up close to 100GB of space which makes absolutely no sense, because it has the same fundamental gameplay as Tekken Tag 1 which was released on a 700MB CD ROM for the…
