How do people that do this exercise? are they mostly sedentary? I mostly ride bikes for exercise and need fuel at least every hour on a ride or else I will bonk out. My output is 500kcal/hour based on power meter, a 4 hour ride would be 2000kcal, it's not doable without some food intake.

There are two kinds of IF: a skipping a meal kind, when you only eat during a 6-8 hour window and it's easy to fit a 4 hour bike ride in there or a skipping a day kind, when you don't eat every third/fourth day, then you can use the fasting day to do a recovery ride or even rest.

It’s not black and white though. The body does adapt and respond to just reducing calories in or fasting. It’s better to do portion control, consume fiber and better calories, and exercise to increase metabolism. That all balances the calories out side of the equation in ways where fasting itself won’t. https://theconversation.com/its-time-to-bust-the-calories-in... https://theconversation.com/is-weight-loss-as-simpl…

What is the purpose of increasing fiber? Is it to make you feel full longer?

Keeps you full, is good for gut microbiom, and regulates blood sugars.

I’m just learning about this as trying to be healthier, so I’m not an expert.

It probably would have the same effect, but the point is that a lot of people find it easier to stick to one meal a day (or similar) than multiple smaller meals.

> a lot of people find it easier to stick to one meal a day (or similar) than multiple smaller meals I am highly skeptical of this take... is there any science behind it?

I believe research has mixed results on dietary compliance.

I can only speak anecdotally - if I start doing something enjoyable, it's hard to stop while it's still enjoyable. One of the benefits of an IF diet is you can start eating your main meal and continue until you're full.

Thanks. That makes sense.

It's hilarious that people describe their anecdotal experience of being in a calorie deficit as a proof that "intermittent fasting works". This was never the question, but whether intermittent fasting brings additional weight loss benefits as compared to calorie deficit with frequent meals. My anecdotal experience from 20y of bodybuilding and doing ~3 cuts a year: for cutting, I tried IF, 6 meals a day, low fat, low…

That was never the question or point. It was that’s it’s easier to adhere to intermittent fasting and consume less calories. So if you simply did a study comparing intermittent fasting vs general calorie restriction and didn’t control for calories then intermittent fasting would win. Controlling for calories completely misses the point
