They're pandemic profiteering, so while I appreciate the data they're collecting, I'm not quite ready to start freaking out about it.

In the mid-2010s both Ebola and Zika got a media boost as well, and Candida auris in 2019 or so.

Studies on mass masking tend to get similar results: they don't work either.

Unfortunately it really isn't obvious, plenty of people believe and repeat exactly what they said. Fauci even had an interview recently where he said his biggest regret was not locking down faster and harder.

Why do these viruses often appear in China first? Has there been any study to find out any common patterns? Is it the food? Culture? Living environment?

I'm not sure the definition of lockdown, but it appeared effective in Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
