"Does anyone else find this annoying as hell?" I find it annoying that an unpleasant user experience is generally viewed solely as a problem of the particular website and not a problem of the software available to access websites. For example, the user cannot simply switch to a browser that only supports a subset of the HTML protocol, e.g., one that does not support autoplay. Instead users must expend energy to try t…

I see you getting downvoted for this, but I don't see anything you said that is incorrect. Sure, the way that you use the platform may not be practical for 99.9% of people, but it doesn't make it any less valid.

I quite like it, after having seen it in the, ahem, adult spaces . But seriously though, it's a good enough feature for just checking out whether a video is interesting enough to watch or whether the title and thumbnail are just clickbait, which they often are for making the creators money. It saves me a click or new tab which is even more annoying than hovering over a video.

I like the previews. The annoying part is that Cmd+click opens it both in a new tab (expected) and in the same tab (unexpected). Someone’s being cheeky with JavaScript “links” and for all the shit that Google devrels give everyone else about accessibility … akhem

You can disable it with the "inline playback" toggle here: https://www.youtube.com/account_playback If you don't happen to be in some or other test group, that is. No guarantees :) Absolutely maddening that feature.

Perfect! Thank you.

I have to thank you too. I would've not known where to even look for that.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

> I quite like it, after having seen it in the, ahem, adult spaces. Those of us old enough to have witnessed the early days of YouTube remember that their previous video-preview-on-hover feature was also lifted directly from those same adult spaces :)

Indeed, many such technologies have arisen from adult spaces: https://www.businessinsider.com/porn-behind-internet-technol...

This is the worst! I'm using Linux and Windows so its Ctrl, but the same thing happens... Surely this is a bug they will fix.

I use the YouTube app more than any other app and there is so much I absolutely hate about it.

But the main thing that triggers me is that in the settings there is a place to suggest a feature or report a bug. And in that "form" it doesn't come up with a text box like the I am writing in now, it has choices for functionality that they are just choosing to not add in. "No way to select don't show this video" .. etc. I still can't believe that to refresh the videos on AppleTV my only options are to restart the app or login into guest and then back into my account real quick. Kicker here is with a custom remote on the AppleTV for whatever reason the YouTube menu side scroll breaks and won't let me select 1 spot over, it goes over two spots. So inevitably I have to have the Apple remote on hand too to get new videos.

But again, I use the app a lot. I fear updates to it like the plague. They have never ever added enjoyment to the app. Only taken away features and made things worse.

Any way to disable if I don't have an account? Asking for a friend

I have switched to Piped as a frontend alternative to Youtube, and Libreddit for Reddit. I don't understand why are they so adamant on making the UI worse every passing day. I absolutely loathe the reddit redesign.

I use the old.reddit, don't find it terrible, but yes completely agree about the redesign.
