Hah, wait, so Clubhouse is currently iPhone only? I've been hearing a lot about it but haven't been tempted to join, but now I'm learning that I couldn't even join if I wanted to??

It's only for the cool people, can't have any poor android users in the exclusive clubhouse! I wonder if it was intentional or just a matter of priorisation.

I assume both? Intentionally prioritise iPhone over Android, because thats still (rightly or wrongly) considered the higher value platform to target. Instagram did this back when they launched in 2010 too.

I built https://www.JQBX.fm for this purpose. Not an exact clone but it’s my take on the “social listening” problem.

Whoa, cool to see you here. JQBX powered some really fun virtual hangouts with my friends during lockdown. Thanks for building it!

Absolutely - thanks for using it!

Developer here in case anyone has any questions.

got a couple: why does it send traffic to China? why is audio sent over unencrypted UDP in 2021? who in their right minds would want to listen to footage of what are essentially meeting recordings. I get why people who are enchanted by their own voice, and want to get on it to hear themselves talk, but why on earth would anyone else want to listen to boring audio of people dialogue. it sounds flippant but it's an hon…

I think you're confusing the developer of an unofficial client for a service, with being a developer of the service itself.

Those are all good questions for someone who works at the service in question. I just don't think the person you're responding to is that person.

Don’t know why you’re getting down voted for stating 2 facts. Don’t shoot the messenger.

For a service that is free, in what context is it a better thing that it's users have more money? Just sounds like you think rich people are better... Btw, I'm sure you'll be pretty surprised finding out how much current iphone 5 owners make a year..

It will have to make money somehow won’t it. It will either need to do advertising or get people to pay. Getting people to pay is easier if they have more money. Getting well-paying advertisers is also easier if your audience has more money.

The main thing I was commenting on though was iPhone being much easier to develop for. This is indisputable.

It’s literally called clubhouse, they decided to start a company with the most transparently petty toxic name. You’re not allowed in the clubhouse you’re not part of our cool club! Said Andreesen Horowitz, either a massive VC firm or a 12 year old boy not sure which.

How do you get your initial take on API? I tried to do the mitm and observe the API calls but did not succeed. Do not have JB iphone, so I am curious how did you get the URIs

There's another project[1] with the reverse engineered API in python and a blog post in Korean, so I used that as my reference.

It requires the newest version of iOS too, it's the only app my iPhone 7 won't run.

It works from 13.0. We are at 14.4.

that is most hilarious. so they're using state-of the art mobile devices just so they can send unencrypted audio over udp.

This isn’t true. It works with the iOS version that came out 1.5 years ago - 13.0. Apple is prepping 14.5 for release.
