You're not in the minority, you're in the majority. Not that many people actually use Twitter. That you think you are in the minority is a weird cultural phenom - people with the loud voices behaviours signal to us what is 'normative' even if it is not! Because you see a lot of people using Twitter, you think 'everyone's doing it'. In reality - most people are far more neutral/central than the voices in the web. And…

Twitter had 350 million active users in Q1 of 2016, this is quite a lot actually.

People love to hate Facebook and Twitter, but they ain't going anywhere. The service they provide is too useful, and after so many years they are ingrained in people's social lives.

The likely end result of that is just coded communication. As a similar example, Facebook's "no gun sales" policy now has people selling a pair of socks for $650 using a picture that just happens to have a gun in the background. What I've never understood about Twitter is why it's so slow to evolve. Why doesn't it have better search and filter features? Why doesn't it give users better tools to organize their timelines? Why is its user interface so limited? Why doesn't it let you edit tweets you wrote in the last five minutes? In terms of features, Twitter today is pretty much the same as Twitter 3 years ago. That's insane. It makes me wonder what's wrong with their management.

The severe limitation on the size of tweets selects for puerile violence rather than thoughtful, mutually satisfying interactions.

It's not just the size of tweets, though that does exacerbate things. The entire attention economy of online social media rewards viral attention, and therefore it rewards outrage politics. (Politics in the general sense of Homo sapiens following its social mammal instincts.)

Some of my friends started using Twitter back in 2008, right when it starting gaining traction, so I tried it out as well. I quickly grew bored with it and didn't use it until earlier this year. I tried it again, encouraged by its popularity, and again I stopped using it after a day or two. Twitter has managed to hook millions of people, but it can't seem to hook me. Though I'm sure that says more about me than it says about Twitter.

I haven't experienced harassment (only have 100 followers), but here's what I don't like.

Can't edit tweets

People follow you and unfollow you if you don't follow them back in a day or two.

Webcam porn stars like your tweets to draw attention to themselves.

Inconsistent user experience. Do I click the profile picture to edit my settings or edit my settings to change my profile picture? I always forget.

Still a minority if you think how many are sharing their thoughts on fb or are using whatsapp for group messaging.

agree. all these "fixes" are to change what twitter is. twitter is a short-form, _immediate_ publishing platform. it's great for what's happening _now_. i don't want to read long-form pieces that took 2 days of editing.

i think moments and periscope are good steps. not perfect, but they emphasize _now_.
