Because I don't want anything in the vehicle apart from me deciding when I should brake.

So if you get into a crash, you would rather not have an extra few hundred milliseconds of deceleration? You would rather have more costly repairs, more injuries, maybe even more liability? I just don't see what you get in exchange for that by avoiding these features, or what principal is at stake

What crash?

My car already has this awesome safety feature called a "windscreen". It's a bit of thick glass about a metre and a half across, kind of like the screens that cars now have inside but here's the clever bit - it lets you look outside the car! It's completely transparent with no electronics (although mine has very fine wires embedded to heat it to clear ice off, that's not really "active" in any sense).

By looking out of this "windscreen" at other things in front of your car, you can prevent crashes.

My iPhone automatically shares the internet without enabling hotspot with my Toyota via Bluetooth. It happens automatically. I just start the car, and it happens. And CarPlay is not involved, since there is no such thing in my car.

What are you looking at to know that's happening? Is the Toyota downloading/displaying some information only available on your phone, or from the Internet, or something else? Could it have a 4G connection of its own? What's the connection that makes you think the phone connection is letting it upload data over the Internet using your phone?

The car states that it connected to my phone and gets internet through it. There is a specific indicator for it. I have no clue what it downloads/uploads because I use it solely as a very expensive Bluetooth speaker.

Sure, and Volkswagen’s diesel cars are totally clean and pass emissions tests as written. Your trust in the law (EU law! Haha) to do the enforcing itself is nice, but history and lived experience tell me that these laws are going to be skirted if there’s money in it.

Sorry, I missed the bit where the company was fined, prosecuted, suffered a consumer backlash and subsequently brought their behaviour into check. Honestly, the number of people on here spreading FUD and defending the 'right' for the adtech industry to invade their private lives and treat them like shit is unreal. One could almost think their salaries are dependent on it!

Plenty of people have been turned into ashes by not being able to escape burning Tesla's due to Elon's moronic hidden physical handle design.

I mean, there were gasenwagens and VW literally used slave labour of certain camps.

I'm not sure how this is relevant to Elon Musk being a white supremacist.

Ah, I see where you are coming from. As a driver with perfect attention, zero ms response time, 360 degree vision and a car that never fails in a world where no other driver ever makes mistakes, this feature doesn't help you.

You still never articulated an upside to not having it though.

Step 1. Be very, very single When I was a younger man, audio visual forums used to have an unfortunately sexist, but fairly good conceptual measure they called “wife acceptance factor”. It should really just be partner acceptance factor. Regardless of whom you are with, I hope they would physically intervene before letting you do this. What is the point? All of these posts feel like they miss the forest for the trees…

So the authors goal is to reduce his car's ability to transmit his data to Toyota. His solution: disconnect the cell modem Your solution: Be single, never drive a car ever, and leave your phone at home. ?????

Honey.

What are you talking about? People sell used cars with broken stuff all the time. You don't have to tell the buyer that you intentionally broke that feature. The mechanics that I use would all consider this modification entirely reasonable and not say anything about it after you explained yourself. Also my spouse is just as paranoid as this guy is and when I told her what new vehicles collect she was happy she had an…

My mother always told us, “fits find each other”.

So happy to maniacs did.

Storage space is limited. There's a black box for accidents that keeps a rolling window of data. That's not the dcm. Outside of that, how much telemetry can you store? What's the retention when there's no cellular connection? And importantly, where is it stored? My guess is that the dcm, having a battery back up and a cellular connection, is also the telemetry store. No evidence other than it's the cheapest and most…

That's an interesting point but consider that bandwidth is also limited when we're talking about an always on system that's in every vehicle sold. And until recently storage was remarkably cheap. If you log 32 bytes once per second that's only 962 MiB per year uncompressed. But 32 bytes is a lot (or depending on what you're logging not very much), once per second is almost certainly more frequent than necessary, and…

Yah, but automakers are very cost-sensitive, and flash memory/NVM is one of the easiest places to penny-pinch. I get crap about 2kB payloads.

If you think your Tesla is somehow more "private" then my pre-2010's ICE car with no tracking electronics, then you are delusional.

With no antennas, can a Tesla transmit anything at all? BTW I don’t own a Tesla. My car is like yours, a pre-2010 gas minivan with zero tracking. Our phones and roadside Flock cameras still rat out both kinds of vehicles. I suspect soon cameras in other cars will also be reporting our whereabouts. Absolute privacy is almost impossible on public roads.

This is something I've been very concerned about.

You cannot park in a parking lot without over 100 cameras being angled towards you from neighboring cars. The fact we let it get this bad is insane.

This is relevant to your comparasion of death camps to twitter posts.
