Also a musician and I don't think it's that amusing. IMO this isn't an "AI can't be art" discussion. It's about the fact that AI can be used to extract value from other artists' work without consent, and then out-compete them on volume by flooding the marketplace.

And you create music without ever having heard music before? Or are you also extracting other artist’s work and using it as inspiration for what you do? AI music is the same as AI code. It’s derived from real code, but it’s not just regurgitated wholesale. You still as a person with taste have to guide it and provide inputs. Electronic music made it so you didn’t have to learn to play an instrument. Auto tune made it…

> Electronic music...

Your instrument is the computer and designing sound. You still have to have talent and musical ear to make this music.

I used to sing dumb songs like when changing my kids diaper I’d sing “you got a STINKY DIAPER, you got a stinky diaper and it smelled like pee, oh don’t you knoooow what I mean” sung to Deo’s Holy Diver. Just dumb stuff like that. I still sing songs like that, only now I’ve got almost an hour of dumb songs that Suno has made, like my kid asked “what if we just put in gibberish and the word poop a lot?” As kids do, an…

I don't think they're arguing about personal use of AI to make something silly shared between family and friends. It's when those songs you made in an instant start to flood platforms where people took weeks, months or years to release an album they crafted by traditional methods. I don't want to discredit the joy you have in making fun songs with your family. I'm curious what is also gained if you made the songs by…

Music is not inherently time-consuming to make, people can jam out a tunes at one minute per minute and bandcamp is full of those.

This platform sees high front page placement / hundreds of votes for AI-written … uh sorry I mean “I used the AI to clean up my notes” … content daily. I have an allergic reaction to it and flag, but clearly a majority of the hn voting population appreciates it, so if it isn’t banned it will continue.

I think the majority of HN users don't even read the article and just use the headline as a conversation starter.

That’s probably right; you can often spot an LLM-assisted post from the overly dramatic title.

Anecdotally, though, these articles seem to have a disproportionate number of, “Wow, this article is so interesting & insightful”-class comments. I really have come around to accepting that a big part of the audience here enjoys what LLM’s produce given hn-ish prompts.

I’d rather see the prompt!

Funny to see this right now. Spotify's promotion of AI music bothered me so much that it has actually pushed me to Bandcamp and the practice of buying music again. It's really fun to build a collection knowing you're supporting the artists, download FLAC files, organize your little "collection" page ... Feels like a renaissance in my relationship with music, the most fun I've had since what.cd. Anyway, love this stan…

For those who miss Spotify connect capabilities and apps, I've been using Roon (self-hosted, but susbcription required) for my music library for a couple years now and it is absolutely excellent. You get full access to stream your own library and the ability to integrate into Tidal and/or Qobuz for any music you want to hear but don't own a copy of. It's really very good.

Whenever I see defences of AI "art" people very often reduce the arguments to these analogies of using tools, but it's ineffective. Whether you use MS Paint, Photoshop, pencil, watercolor etc. That all requires skill, practice, and is this great intersection of intent and ability. It's authentic . Generating media with AI requires no skill, no intent, and very minimal labor. It is an approximation of the words you ty…

Your snobbery will be short-lived as tools eclipse our "art", and creativity is revealed as nothing inherently unique to humans. Creativity, fundamentally, is overlapping memories of what you have seen already. Literally no different than any diffusion or transformer model. You painting a piece of art or composing a song was really the functional output of billions of cells coordinating in unison, 100% subconsciously…

I really disagree with the level of glee you display in predicting that artists will be replaced - that said, this:

>Soon you will have to grapple with the reality of what really drives your enjoyment of media, and part of that will be realizing that the human-ness never mattered at all.

is a good point that many media consumers will at some point have to come to grips with. There is a sense, almost accelerationist, in which the machine-generation of vast amounts of enjoyable media (let's not pretend none of it will be enjoyable) forces people to reconsider what drives their engagement with art/entertainment, what value there really is in sitting still for 2 hours to watch a movie or listen to music no matter how good. (As you can see all over this comment section most people have staggeringly naive ideas about art)

People who won’t invest anything and just want to make a quick buck won’t be successful with AI generated content/music. You still need to invest significant time and effort to make it work.

LOL you clearly haven’t checked the flows of million-plus-views ambient music bullshit videos on YouTube

I never said it’s impossible to be successful with slop, i said it still needs work and time investment to be successful

This has already been the case way before AI was a thing. As a new artist you have to compete against 60+ years of music history - much of it really good music too.

As a listener this is a good thing. Too much good music. Now it’s that the listener has to compete with 60x absolute slop to find something good.

I personally don’t have that problem. I can find new good music easily on soundcloud/bandcamp/youtube - much more than I have time to consume. Maybe this 60x absolute slop thing is a problem if you use services like Spotify - which arguably are a much bigger plight upon artists than AI generated slop

Not a conspiracy theory. Spotify hires session musicians (pre-AI) to pay a flat fee for hours of background music. Since many high volume Spotify users just want “something jazzy” in the background, it helps them reduce royalties.

> Spotify hires session musicians (pre-AI) to pay a flat fee for hours of background music. Spotify doesn't do it because Spotify doesn't produce music and doesn't have direct contracts with musicians. > Since many high volume Spotify users just want “something jazzy” in the background, it helps them reduce royalties. How does it help them reduce royalties when they don't produce their own music and license 100% of t…

You're being unnecesarily pedantic. They might not hire the musicians directly but if they're hiring an agency to do that, it's effetively the same thing. Ultimately they're trying to get generic music for cheap to reduce royalty payments to artists.

AI music is the same. There is no surprise. No human element. No interest. No intention.

But the qusstion never got answered. If you liked a song that you later realized was generated would it ruin the song? If a robot ai basketball team was authentic enough to have hoodwinked me into thinking it was a real entertaining team then it has become a different question than whether or not I would knowingly participate as a spectator in an AI basketball league.

For me, yes it would.

I have less than zero interest in art that isn't made by humans.
