It seems like people here have already made up their mind about how bad llms are. So just my anecdote here, it helped me out of some really dark places. Talking to humans (non psychologists) had the opposite effect. Between a non professional and an llm, i'd pick llm for myself. Others should definitely seek help.

~11% of the US population is on antidepressants. I'm not, but I personally know the biggest detriment to my mental health is just how infrequently I'm in social situations. I see my friends perhaps once every few months. We almost all have kids. I'm perfectly willing and able to set aside more time than that to hang out, but my kids are both very young still and we're aren't drowning in sports/activities yet (hopeful…

Small kids do this to everybody. The only solution - if you have good family nearby, use them as parenting services from time to time, to get me-time, couple-time and social time with friends. Buy them gift or vacation as return. Its incredibly damaging to marriage which literally transforms overnight from this rosy great easy-to-manage relationship into almost daily hardship, stress and nerves. Alternative is a (goo…

We have parents nearby and they go there sometimes, but our oldest is quite the handful so we feel bad about doing it too much. She's just...very active, and always wants to play with someone. Always. At least kid #2 is easy. Regardless, it doesn't make it any easier to set up time with friends, just each other, and half of the time we do it just so we can get stuff done around the house.

You're right about the marriage stress. I've definitely seen the light at the end of the tunnel with friends/family that are further along in their kid's ages, though to be fair they haven't really hit peak teenage years either. At least there seems to be something of a lull.

I mean, sure, that definitely makes it easier. But it didn't used to be this way when people had kids, either. People used to get together a lot more frequently.

I feel like this begs another question. If there are proven approaches and well established practices of professionals how good would chatgpt be in that profession? After all chstgpt has a vast knowledge base and probably knows a good amount of textbooks on psychology. Then again actually performing the profession probably takes skil and experience chatgpt can't learn.

I think a well trained LLM could be amazing at being a therapist. But general purpose LLMs like ChatGPT have a problem: They’re trained to be far too user led. They don’t challenge you enough. Or steer conversations appropriately. I think there’s a huge opportunity if someone could get hold of really top tier therapy conversations and trained a specialised LLM using them. No idea how you’d get those transcripts but t…

An anecdote here: I recently had a conversation with Claude that could be considered therapy or at least therapy-adjacent. To Anthropic's credit, Claude challenged me to take action (in the right direction), not just wallow in my regrets. Still, it may be true that general-purpose LLMs don't do this consistently enough.

>start meeting people in real life. Depends on the country and person I guess. When I did try approaching women a few times, it was 10% angry looks, 30% awkward, 30% basic polite conversation to fulfill social obligation, and 30% friendly conversation. Unfortunately I'm not keen enough to pursue that 30% of friendly conversations by wading through the rest.

I know right? And tech is such a male-dominated industry, so presence of a female in your proximity is a rare event by itself. But, even if such an event occurs, as you said, interacting with a female is one hell of a minefield. Honestly, at this point, I cannot blame people for choosing to be gay. It is just so much easier to just talk to men, because you don't have to worry about all those mind games.
