Are they the ones to blame for this all though?

Our culture has made a very bright line decision that sex with minors is unacceptable. Expressing doubt about this cultural norm, or especially advocating against it, is considered unacceptable. Of course one can argue with the merits of those two facts, but they are plainly true and fairly widely accepted. The very concept of statutory rape reinforces how clear this judgment is. The reference to "statutory" means th…

So people were right to suggest that black people need special policing at the time when it was the right political message, or Bernie Sanders was quite mistaken to advocate for gay rights at a time when it was a bad issue for any candidate. Many Americans still believe that black people have special criminal characteristics or that homosexuality is a severe spiritual evil. Perhaps more social harmony could’ve been achieved had we not advocated for convenient theories of the time.

It’s history which has the opportunity of final judgement, and it almost always looks dimly on the moral sensibilities of their predecessors.

Somewhere is a metaphorical Bernie whose career has disappeared, but I’m glad for those people who didn’t hop on political opportunism just because as a messaging and thought leader it’s the strong move which reads the room.

My point isn’t about the substance of his remarks (though I’m firmly in the “adults shouldn’t fuck children” camp if my position were somehow relevant). My point is that there are a bunch of people nitpicking that the Minsky remarks aren’t a tacit endorsement of pedophilia, and maybe they’re not. But RMS has a tacit endorsement of pedophilia on his website, so if that’s a bad enough thing to fire someone over then th…

No. Your comment did not read as "my opponents are nitpicking by denying that he questioned the badness of sex with children", you just stated your belief in the badness of sex with children and how nothing more needs to be said. "Full stop". "Why is this a conversation". And you are now backpedalling. Stop with this crap, I'm sick of the emotional rhetoric and lies in everything. I wish we were in a world where en e…

I said “you’re gonna have a bad time”. He’s having a bad time. The fact that I’m anti-pedophilia is incidental to the fact that the Minsky remarks are not necessary to establish that RMS is (was?) at least plausibly pro-pedophilia at one point by his own admission on his own website.

I literally cannot believe that words like “SS Officer” and “authoritarian rightists” are making an appearance in a conversation that started roughly with “nah he actually said that shit, here’s the link, and no one should be surprised that he’s having a terrible time as a result, the Minsky shit is not necessary to establish that he actually said that”.

I really cannot see why everyone is so fucking super duper hyper charged up over this. Pedophilia being bad is about as vanilla of a position that it’s possible to take on anything, and while free speech entitles people in the US at least to take a different position, it seems like kind of a stretch to expect anyone’s employer to line up behind that.

No, gay rights and equal rights for minorities are admirable.

Advocating for adults to rape children, on the other hand, is reprehensible.

Your argument appears to be that there is no way to tell the difference between good things and bad things.

My counterargument is that there are ways to tell the difference. And that when you do, you'll conclude that adults raping children is one of the bad things.

And someone who’s great but an ass/racist/sexist could push out, deter, and marginalize geniuses. We do not have a deficit of people able to do wonderful things. We do not have to tolerate terrible people to get results.

You know what, I agree with you on that (at least concerning racism/sexism). But when it comes to "ass(holes)" and other "terrible people", as we can see from the whole RMS debacle, most people are unreliable and incapable of correctly identifying those terrible people. I should've been more precise in this: Seemingly terrible people deserve an accurate evaluation that does not rely on "feelings" or the lynch-mob. De…

That's fair and it is subjective - but I think it's pretty simple to come up with an "Employee Bill of Rights" that can enumerate "inalienable" rights for your employees, e.g. the right respectful communication (aka not being shouted at) etc. The internet is full of them.

This is, of course, different from being blunt, quiet, or other sorts of personality quirks people can associate negatively with. But I would say the line between proper and improper workplace behavior is more defined than people think.

I think the fear you are bringing up is the slippery slope into people being fearful of every interaction, but that will always need to be managed just like privacy and security and there will never be a one size fits all. But there certainly can be some pretty simple baselines established. Unions do it all the time - to varying degrees of success.

Gay rights are admirable to you. Rights for minorities like Latinos or blacks are admirable to you. But you don’t speak for places like America, which is diverse enough to politically contemplate whether gay people should be married or have kids, or whether Muslims and immigrants cause no-go zones.

Those politicians which advocate for antagonism against Latinos and other minorities are reading the room too.

RMS is a true Hero, he gives his life to fight for the basic human right for free computing. RMS is a modern historical figure on par with Jesus. His weird opinions on other topics and clumsy social behaviour do not matter a bit in comparision and if at all they need to be adressed with love and care, not cruxification.

It may be unintentional on your part but your post seems to suggest that rms argued that adults raping children was acceptable.

If that was intentional the you are lying.

If it was not intentional the it's ironic that you are so sloppy and cavalier in your wording on a topic which is all about precision in language.

Please stop.

Correct me if i'm wrong but it sounds like you're trying to say 'People who have a leadership role in an educational or advocacy setting are not entitled to have a certain opinion or preference that does not fall within the lines our "society" has drawn out to be normal?' AFAIK there are plenty of high positioned people in important positions whom have a special preference to something. Whether it be a kink or a tota…

No, it means that if you think raping children is okay you don't get to say that as part of your work, unless your work is for a pro-child-abuse…

This is not the first time you have made this untrue allegation DanBC. It is clear now that you are acting in very bad faith. It speaks volumes about your reliability.
