Another confirmation that engineers and product developers are no longer in control at Google. Engineering and product first is how Google won the game initially, very easy to forget that when the money rolls in massively and the power structures move away from those driving forces. Microsoft already went through this engineering/product growth to bizdev/marketing control to stagnation and is already in the return to…

This is simply too naive. We need regulation to stop global tech monopolities shamelessly exploiting their dominant position, be it Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Samsung and so on. I doubt this can be done properly on any other level than national.

Yes! We'll just write our problems away.

I like to think that Google is just not a conventional company and that they do everything to not become one. They creatively solve challenges (like how to keep certain cookies when a user presses "remove all") and this helps them provide unbiased, accurate, and free access to the world's information. People wanting to stay signed in can rely on them to do the right thing, even if in the near term the financial returns are not obvious. Their corporate structure is aligned with this objectivity: Serving their end users is at the heart of what they do. When people are logged off you can't really consider them your number one priority, because they don't either. Many Silicon Valley companies are under pressure to keep their earnings in line with short-term analyst's forecasts, Google is no exception here. But forced and universal log-in to Google's services optimizes for long-term return. Everybody hoped, but nobody believed, that Google would end up in this powerful position: Being able to strong-arm your power users, while still providing the best, most accurate, search results for people not logged in. In the end, this business tactic of universal and forced log-in makes the world, and by extension the internet, a better place. I know some people here raise privacy concerns, but this change clearly protects a user's privacy.

No direct data. But that's the impression I have gotten over the years. I've seen a ton of posts at the frontpage that talk about moving away from Apple for whatever reason, which are always heated debates. I've never seen any post of people jumping from Windows to mac or linux (I believe that's not a situation a lot of people on HN are in). it might be my filter bubble, but if I google "hacker news mac vs windows" t…

> talk about moving away It's just that. All talk. Including the usual empty threats of "don't piss of the technical people". Meanwhile, they're still logging into Facebook using Chrome on their Windows machines.

The less empty detail is regulatory. "Big tech" is getting increasingly scrutinized over both monopoly abuse and privacy issues. Certainly this is another piece of evidence to regulators that Google is abusing their position.

Can't speak for ux-app but most people on HN are on macs, also a lot of people on linux.

Right. But there's a certain amount of irony that people are ditching Chrome, while still using an OS which literally does spy on you.

It took me several days to root out all of the programs and services in my enterprise windows 10 install which were spying on me or attempting to install software without my consent, had to prevent cortana from running, block windows servers with hosts file, delete scheduled tasks, adjust group policy, disable updates, and firewall my own computer.

All this so that I could have an OS that isn't actively spying on me, and play games on it. Thank goodness valve is making progress on linux...

Dropping chrome is not enough. Switch to bing (Just as good as G), or ddg if you really want. Then ditch android which is the spy in your pocket. If you're installing G analytics for clients then choose an alternative (I'm open to suggestions here). It's really time to disentangle ourselves from google. They've quietly and effectively insinuated themselves across the web. Enough is enough.

Is there a good alternative for google photos? I remember I looked for one few months ago after I got a little freaked out by google facial recognition, but didn't find any good alternative.

flickr.com ?

90% of people won't care / aren't able to understand the issue. That's were google is heading its efforts :)

This doesn't matter. The people who fix your computers or help you over the phone are the family friends who are geeks/programmers. Once the geek herd has moved on to something else, then the mass follows whatever they're currently using, because they're the ones that advocate the change. It will take a few years, but once Google has lost the geek vote, they will die a slow death like Microsoft did. At this point my…

For that matter, Apple aggressive marketed to the techie-and-designer crowd for years, even while everyone knew aiming products at programmers was far lower margin than mass-market stuff. The payoff wasn't bottom line profits, it was cachet and technical support and useful software that ran nicely on Macs.

For something like Chrome, one price of alienating devs is, among other things, that everyone who thinks "damn, I wish I had an extension for X, I guess I'll make one!" develops it for Firefox instead.

I assume this is the engineering at work. "Okay, users are confused by how they're logged into Google but not Chrome, or Chrome but not Google - let's make them one and the same". "Okay, but once you're logged into Chrome now, every post we check to see if we have the Google cookies to keep that sync... so that means when you clear the cookies the Google ones will automagically reappear" "Ugh, let's just notify the u…

Hackernews needs it’s own version of infowars where people can declare and believe in their most absurd and cynical conspiracy theories regarding tech.

Putting yourself in a weaker position due to your views doesn't scale and thus doesn't work. For one hero there are ten conformists at the same level of skill, waiting for him/her to leave. While it's brave, it is also pointless. The problem as you state it can be solved only by explicit consensus, being it a law or just a manifesto. Modern privacy has no professional and power-y organization under it, except for few…

Citation needed. How do you know that? Maybe it's more like this: For every conscientious person deciding not to take a stand because they think it's pointless, there are ten conscientious persons also deciding not to take a stand because they think it's pointless. Maybe when one person speaks up, others will be emboldened.

It is called a hunger strike and for that you must be literally hungry anyway. All other strikes are solved by dealing with few instigators. I doubt that it really requires any citation, since it is a manager’s textbook case.

Everybody at Google, for anything they do, should ask a simple question on any proposal ... how does this impact user privacy for those that care?

Given Google's size and power it's irresponsible for them to not do so.

And given that there are really smart people working for Google, including a whole department working on analyzing the threats and preserving user privacy, I won't believe for a second that nobody thought of this. Which may mean that they don't care, even if they did once. And again, given their size, their power, their potential for harm, that's not OK. With great power comes great responsibility, bla, bla.

So I'm not buying that.

Also, now that the shit has hit the fan, lets see what they do in response. Probably nothing ;-)
