Do you not see the irony of posting this on a social media site (hacker news), given you're one of the users? I guess self-hatred is one of the motivating vectors of authoritarianism. Would you also secretly like it if daddy government was always watching you on camera and triggered your shock collar every time you reached for a candy bar?

Hackernews is not social media. Just no. Unless the term os literally meaningless in which case my Company's slack ks social media.

Sorry, yes. Ever hear of Yammer?

Is it really so controversial to ban it entirely? We ban heroin and other hard drugs. I think most people are better off, and have a more nuanced view of reality if the only news they get is local. Or the updates from people they know always in person.

Social media is not a hard drug.

It's worse. It's the last thing before going to sleep that the addict uses and it's the first thing they check in the morning before having a thought to themselves. It doesn't run out. Everybody's doing it. People are losing jobs and relationships over it. At least fetty you gotta leave the house to get more. Instagram Reels never make you leave the house.

I've been on reddit long enough to get sick of the constant reposts. They really should have a filter for that.

But this is antithetical to what Reddit is. It's not like StackExchange websites, where the whole point is to create a database of canonical questions and answers. Reddit doesn't have some basic forum functionality by design. I've once talked to a person connected to someone at Reddit Inc, and they indirectly confirmed this (in retrospect it was very obvious).

Why can't it be an option?

thread ranking is useful and doesn't increase addictiveness I do agree that karma increases addictiveness and adds little value; I can see it being useful for certain permissions (so new accounts can't do thinks like downvoting), but it could just not be visible to the user; then there's no motivation to "increase my karma"

> thread ranking is useful and doesn't increase addictiveness Can you please elaborate on what you find useful about thread-ranking? It's an anti-feature that only serves to increase addictiveness (by making top-level comments into a competition) and make it impossible to reload an active discussion and find your place again, in my opinion.

I find it useful because when browsing a post, you have the most upvoted or commented on at the top. I don't see how it increases top-level comment competition unless commenters are trying to get their comment up to the top? I think if you hide the karma, and that would also including hiding how many upvotes/downvotes your comment got, then you can't really track the "competition" and makes it much less competitive (and potentially addictive).

(I do see your point about not being able to keep your place, though I don't systematically go through all comments in a post -- or very rarely -- more just quickly browse for things that catch my attention, interesting info, etc.)

What makes those of you who advocate for the state control over what children can do on the Internet (which used to be parents' business, prerogative and liability - all implied to be a total failure of parenthood now) so sure that you, grown ass adults, won't be the next target of the police state nanny?

No, the reality is far worse - and prohibitively expensive in time and money to any individual as opposed to large corporation. https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/401475/

seems like their complaints are in two areas: bureaucracy to register, and needing to respond to abuse reports. Which is what I said. They complain about hiring a moderation team to respond to abuse reports? How are they doing it now? Do they not respond?

Compliance certification costs money - lots of it. The laws also require proactive scanning of uploaded material, not just responding to complaints, and require a person to be declared liable for mistakes.

Gone are the says of paying a couple hundred a year for a host and a vBulletin license. The new costs are many thousands plus permanent liability, and no thanks - that's way more than I'm going to do for a group of enthusiasts online.

Agreed. I wish they would consider charging a small fee (~$1) to create an account. That alone would cut down on all the AI spam and give subreddit moderators a fighting chance.

Something Awful has retained a weirdly high level of quality these days by (still) charging :tenbux: to register an account.

Also manages to sustain itself on it's own weird brand of whales, a handful of disgruntled users with enough money to just keep buying accounts using random characters as a username just to get immediately banned after their first post. Some taking a dump in the middle of your living room isn't so bad if they are paying your rent and you can just kick them back out.

Tbh, anything that is not a proprietary closed garden. Why access to the clubs/interest groups now requires to compromise the privacy?

Wait, you're saying that using Signal or Telegram is compromising privacy? I'm really curious what you're hoping for?

>Wait, you're saying that using Signal or Telegram is compromising privacy?

How come after all these years even people here still don't know telegram by default has no end to end encryption at all making it worse than facebooks WhatsApp? At this point it deserves to be called telegram distortion field.

> The best large-scale work I’ve seen finds the average association between overall screen/social-media use and teen well-being is tiny Can you share the source? The last time I looked the association was both clear and pretty strong, e.g. "There was a linear dose–response association of TSSM and risk of depression. The risk of depression increased by 13% (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.09 to 1.17, p > “Social media” lumps toge…

Thanks for the reply, will look into the links. And yes, full agreement, algorithmic ranking is a whole different dynamic, and has to be both researched and regulated differently than a dumb feed. Even the latter probably has levers moderating human reception, i.e. if we evolved in communities of less than 150 individuals, being able to routinely follow the curated lives of e.g. 500 people probobly has other effects than a feed of 50 actual RL friends.
