Remember when the Youtube app overrode the AppleTV screensavers, to show their own screensavers if Youtube was paused. Any other app, you leave a video paused, the OS screensaver will come on. YES. That was HORRIBLE. Thankfully that only lasted like a day or two.

The fact that they would ever think that was possibly an OK thing to do though shows you how brain dead they are.

The odd thing is, they seem to be getting progressively _worse_. The Netflix one was way better when the first ‘modern’ (app-y) appletv came out, say. Even the YouTube one used to be basically _fine_.

I would genuinely like to understand this perspective. Ads or paying for premium is how the underlying business makes money. The UX might suck but you have a choice - you can just not watch YouTube. The approach you describe (which i understand is a popular one) is equivalent to justifying robbing a store because their prices are too high.

The approach is the equivalent of avoiding the end of aisles so that you don't even look at the products that companies are paying to the store to promote.

Most content creators have links to support them with donation or patreon. Once a year choose 3 small youtubers (larger ones are already multi-millioners, they don't need your help) and drop them $5 each. Now you just did 1000% of what they could get from you watching ads.

what's insane, even $1 is more than they'll get from you watching every single one of their videos. The issue is processing fees on that payment, so might as well give em a bit more. It's wild how low the payout on ads is. Seriously, just flip people $1 every once in a while and it's more support than ads. It's so stupid how people get all morally superior when they figure out that someone block ads.

When did you create the throwaway? The last time I tried they directly asked for a phone number.

Yeah the phone number thing across services is out of hand and we need a hide my email type solution for it now.

I checked in at a restaurant recently and they asked for my number to text me when our table was ready. As soon as the number finished they had my name and all sorts of info I never gave them. It’s totally out of control.

Not sure why you would rely on an AppleTV or any bespoke streaming device. It's effectively a service. If you like it right now, it will be worse in a few weeks, months, or years. Eventually it will be unsupported even though the hardware still works fine. You don't own it an it'll just be made worse by the different incentives of the hardware provide and the media streaming companies.

And yet here I am being told by young devs that these kinds of terrible UX decisions don't matter, or I get mocked for bringing them up. They don't have the cognizance of experience to know why these things matter or can, and they struggle to even conceptualize how things like this can be security holes open for spammers and scammers.

If they worked for me, they'd learn fast or wouldn't work for me for long.

I tried to make a custom Subscriptions view for YouTube but they kept blocking me for trying to scrape hundreds of RSS feeds.

Maybe because their robots.txt disallows that?
