I'm not saying they should, just disagreeing with the idea that it's a proven thing. Apple likely has many reasons for not selling a user-configurable Mac, but I don't believe "users don't want it" is in that list of reasons. For example, customers definitely want lower prices, and a modular/user-upgradable Mac would clearly offer that (e.g. upgrading the stock hard drive with something much bigger, faster, and cheap…

Apple users above all want something that “just works”. The more flexibility and options that Apple offers, the less likely that will remain true. If you want choice, Apple is not the way to go.

Simple answer: price. 13in pro starts at $1299. The newer 14in starts at $1999.

Why purchase a 13in pro over the m2 chip air?

Probably the biggest reason is the fan.

Allows for increased sustained performance as benchmarks have shown with M1.

Someone I know is unable to upgrade their MAC, I do not know what kind or how old it is. But is is not that old, maybe 10 years or so.

You really have to ask? Because why? You live in an Apple world before Google search has existed because Apple hasn't invented search yet right? Anecdata here, but I owned an HP Spectre 360 laptop a few years ago and I would never buy another HP laptop again. It cost almost as much as a Macbook, and within ~2 years of gentle use, mostly around the house, it blew a speaker, the webcam developed a purple tint, the rubber strips on the base peeled off, and when I tried to open the case to check for a second M.2 slot, one of the Torx screws stripped and remains stuck.

Agreed. There were minor use cases were it was delightful to use (able to swipe & adjust brightness or volume). But overall it was just useless. You weren't even able to skip to the next song, like you can on the old function keys. Play & skip to next song are probably my most used buttons, one of which never stand-alone existed on the Touch Bar.

You can/could modify the touchbar to get skip easily, see Keyboard settings

I like the XPS 13 line myself. The 93xx line lasted all night when I forgot to shut the lid one evening (9+ hours) with Fedora (after running `powertop` and doing its tweaks). I was eyeing an XPS like of notebooks for many years, but comments like the ones in sibling threads are holding me back from acting upon it.

Just got an XPS 15 with i9-12900HK with Ubuntu 22.04 (5.18 kernel installed after the fact). Still working the kinks out, but the machine won’t reliably wake when the lid is opened. It’s about 10% faster than my M1 Pro, but with much worse battery life. If I didn’t still need an AMD64 machine for somethings, there’s no reason to put up with the quirks of a Linux laptop IMO.

I remember hearing people complain about their keyboards, not that they couldn't video conference.

In just about any HN thread on Apple’s Intel-powered laptops, you’ll find plenty of actual users complaining about excessive fan noise and getting heat-soaked under load - compilation and video calls being a big one - with the problem being greater for the higher-powered i7 and particularly i9 machines. We were definitely complaining.

Agreed. The M1 drove me to become a Mac user/customer. I have been buying $600 used Dell professional laptops for ages...laughing at the stupid Mac people. The performance/effeciancy/quality/value of the M1 laptops exceeds any Intel laptop I'm aware of. Match the specs the best you can--Intel fan is going to howl all day and you better have a charger ready--the Mac is cheaper. Anyway, Windows sucks your dignity out a…

If you’re looking to avoid telemetry, Mac OS is not the alternative.

M1 Air (especially) has been having screen issues too, including tinting; I've personally witnessed it. I think HP did become really bad around 2012, but they've really picked up their game lately. I've seen some great HP laptops, but you don't need to go with HP. There are even cheaper laptops that are slightly less powerful but still great for what they are capable of.
