I think there is a bit of wider social norms piece missing as well on AI use in knowledge work context. Someone forwarded an enormous amount of text over teams the other day at work. From someone (bless her) that always means well but usually averages about one spelling mistake per word and rarely goes over 20 words per message. Clearly copy paste chatgpt. For say hn gang that thinks in terms of context shifts, infor…

You have to call it out when you see it, politely and charitably. "Hey, thanks! This is a great overview, and I actually asked ChatGPT before asking here and got a lot of the same information, but what I'm really looking for is..."

I like this. I thought to iterate on it a bit, for the folk who respond better to higher-tact phrasing:

"Thanks. I have access to ChatGPT as well. But I ask people for help when it fails. Your thoughts are smarter than GPT's, please provide those, next time."

Though, I'd like to be more succinct/terse.

A decade+ is plenty of time to spend a few weeks brushing up on CS basics. There is really only a handful of algorithms and data sctructues and none of them are rocket science. And what's the alternative? Quizzing people on some random C# framework methods? The "I don't use algos in a day to day job" argument has been around forever, but nobody making it ever proposes a better filter.

Strong no hire for Staff+ signal from this post. Meta's leetcode gambit includes leetcode Hards and Mediums which aren't just "remember your hash maps and trees!" They're incredibly hard to brute force under time pressure if you haven't practiced similar problems before. Now do that for every interview -- exhausting. Alternative? Lol? System design. "Walk me through systems you've built." Have a conversation. If you…

> Alternative? Lol? System design. "Walk me through systems you've built." Have a conversation. If you can't then maybe you don't have the skill for interviewing or dare I say the skill to be an engineer.

This. I can talk about projects I've worked on from day 1 in my career to date. Some more than others, but at least I can cover the high level.

> It is not possible to "enforce" a "value system". That's not what I said. What I said was that you can't enforce a value system "that benefits us all"--because "us all" will never agree on what value system that should be, at least not once you get beyond small groups of people. But of course you can just declare by fiat that your preferred value system "benefits us all", and ignore objections, and if you have enou…

Have you ever been sailing on a yacht with friends? There is s hierarchy. Generally in my experience it is the person on the tiller who will bark commands as the boat moves across the wind. A hierarchy, temporary, amongst friends. Everybody gets good things.

> Have you ever been sailing on a yacht with friends?

Yes. A small group of people, who know each other and want to be together. Sure, works fine.

> Generally in my experience it is the person on the tiller who will bark commands as the boat moves across the wind.

Yep. I've been that person. I've also been the person who had to get out of the way quickly when I heard "coming about!" so the boom wouldn't clout me on the head.

> A hierarchy, temporary, amongst friends.

Yes: temporary, for a specific purpose where one person is obviously in a position to give orders that the others should follow. The friends don't have to agree on their entire value system or philosophy of life. They only have to agree on who's in the best position to warn everyone of an impending event that they need to know about.

And amongst friends, who aren't going to bicker over all this because they're there to have a good time with each other, and there are no conflicts of interest.

What does any of this have to do with the thread topic?

The issue is that you seem to be proposing nothing but platitudes and when called on it, did not elaborate but high tailed to the cloak of misunderstood defender of sense and sensibility.

It’s not simply platitudes. People use the phrase constantly in this context: https://www.aft.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/2024...

I read it and even with charitable read on the biggest guardrail appears to be putting a bunch of committees in the process to control the process one way or another. At its core, it is a wishlist for education workers and I am not completely against that, but lets call it what it actually is. Beyond that.. I have not seen an actual proposal.. common sense or otherwise. And that is before we get 'being eco friendly' ( how is that guardrail for AI? ), advancing democracy ( again, not sure how it is a guardrail ) or advancing equity and fairness ( same question ).

The closest thing I saw to an actual guardrail was humans.. which, is not wrong at its core, but again lacks specificity.

> You might as well blame the entire US population for certain problematic actions of the president. The equivalent would be blaming those who chose the current president. Which would be an entirely reasonable thing to do.

By that logic, you should blame the people that use meta’s products.

I DO make fun of people who use Instagram for "news".
