Substantive. Try this, I'm genuinely curious: if you were going to be born as a random human somewhere on earth, what year would you prefer that to happen?

oh god are we really doing this? just ignore the accelerated decline of virtually the entire world because we have medicine and Netflix?

So what's your answer?

If I can choose the US specifically, then sometime in the 1950s. I think Baby Boomers in the US will go down as the single luckiest generation on earth in terms of socioeconomic opportunity.

Yeah, I don't disagree, but if we're talking about how our species (which I took "civilization" to mean) as a whole has fared, I think you shouldn't get to pick the where, just the when. If we care about all humans everywhere, and whether fewer of them are starving or dying of preventable diseases or whatever, then I think you have to consider being born as just a random human, not just a random American.

Because I hope that someone who's hands were required to assemble the recipe didn't blindly add ingredients like "bleach" if the AI happened to hallucinate them.

Your personal hope aside, why is it irrational for them?

Because the implication is a random human-generated recipe from wherever has any more risk than the one generated. People who would trust a 'bleach recipe' from AI would also trust it from a Tiktok video or whatever.

Edit: it is irrational to think this way when someone prepares your food¿

But that's just a made up implication to make the other one look better, that's not the only true alternative, so doesn't explain irrationality

People are okay with violence when democratic means (if first past the post even counts) do not solve their problems.

People being okay with violence when they lose the democratic vote is a problem. The system isn't perfect, but again, if you're resorting to violence instead of campaigning for change, society either has to crush you, or we're all going to anarchy

It's a shame there isn't a good alternative.

It is a bit scary how people seem to genuinely be OK with violence (see this reddit thread [0]). Is just me or does it feel like the overall "temperature" has gone up. [0] https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1shugf8/firebomb_t...

Thank you for considering violence against corporate totalitarianism. Please choose one of the following:

A: Violence now!

B: Maybe later.

This is like saying that of course people could tell Ted Bundy was a psychopath, it always shows.

One might insightfully argue the whole point of the psychopath is precisely that it doesn't show. I recommend Cleckley, whose definition is seminal in The Mask of Sanity, [1] originally 1941 but prefer his 1988 fifth edition especially for its rather disconsolate preface. But even a cursory review of either will trivially show the comparison does not hold. [1] https://gwern.net/doc/psychology/personality/psychopathy/…

One might equally insightfully consider that psychopaths get married.
