Sometimes people register new accounts on websites with the sole purpose of sharing their opinion that their displeasure with trans folks is based in some sort of fact-based higher understanding of reality. There is no explanation why they feel the need to show up out of nowhere, but often times they are parroting an off-the-shelf set of edgy opinions that one can pick up off 4chan/Kiwifarms and use as a personality.…

Sometimes people register new accounts so they don't get doxxed for dissenting on controversial topics.

Yep! This is completely compatible with what I described! The people that use these prepackaged edgy personas often don’t actually believe their own dogma enough to stand behind it.

This makes sense because they’re usually not actually expressing personally-held opinions, they are performing a cathartic act of being contrarian in order to cement their position as being both smarter than average and signaling that they’re part of an orthodox group. It’s a lazy performance of disgust for the sake of attention.

To further respond to your original question, these people that value performing disgust using pre-digested replacements for personalities can sometimes become dangerous! And there are a lot of them!

I'd say that constructive criticism isn't between those two things, in the way that i+1 isn't between -1 and -2. Also: what do you think being cancelled is such that you perceive a "vast distance" between it and being heckled? For me, an audience going "boo, your jokes are bad!" is very close to "we're sorry, Mr Comedian, you're not bringing in a big enough audience to justify booking you as a headline act".

But the entire audience didn't say "boo, your jokes are bad!", otherwise no one would have been viewing the Seinfeld stream in the first place. Instead, a tiny fraction of the viewers decided to shout that they were being harmed by the content that no one made them watch, and implied that Twitch is morally culpable for the opinions of (non-human!) creators on their platform. Twitch, out of fear of legal or viral repe…

I didn't use that word.

> out of fear of legal or viral repercussions,

Is why places have always refused to host people even way back when.

It's an even stronger reason for the host location to say "no" than for an event organiser.

Comedian here. Yes it is and yes it can be. But live in fear all your life and help push more policy that takes away rights.

My favorite comedy has been about stereotypes in society, especially negative stereotypes. The joke isn't about the stereotype itself, or the people targeted by the stereotype, but rather the joke is on any dumb-ass who believes in that stereotype (older generations, people with closed minds, etc.) At least that's they way I've always looked at it. It's been difficult the last few years because no one wants to even a…

Platforms aren't there for your free speech, nor should they be. They're there for their own free speech, and freedom of association. Every platform bans content that is perfectly legal: spam, porn, gore, etc. Platforms like gab and parler ban "woke" content. Hell, even libraries pick and choose which books to buy, which books to put in the shelves, which books to put on display. Yes, this is really what we want, if…

I agree with you completely. This is the way that it should be. I will also say, then, that I feel like we’re all a bunch of huge pussies. Sounding more like my dad every day. Great. Curation and censorship are strange cousins, don’t you think? It seems like it’s only censorship if it’s done with big furnaces and a gun barrel by a man with tiny glasses and creased pants. Governments censor. Corporations curate. Right…

I mean, my dad would call you a pussy for playing video games, much less watching somebody else play them on twitch, and my mom would keep her mouth shut lest the verbal abuse be turned on her. I think we should strive to be better than our parents, and think for ourselves.

And, yeah, we've let corporations take control again. But let's be clear, I'm much more concerned about the likes of Halliburton than twitch. Some in government have expressed some interest in breaking up big tech and undermine big oil, so it's not a perfect equivalence, thankfully.

I'm with Ken White[1] on "cancel culture." Sometimes, it goes too far. But by and large, "cancel culture" is better framed as "speech that is critical of other speech." And, yeah, the people at the helm of big platforms have bigger thumbs than the rest of us. But nobody stopped anti-woke Musk from taking over Twitter, did they?

Interesting and a bit over the top IMO but it would be interesting if one could train the bot to be ToS safe. A lot of shows from the 90s would violate those Twitch ToS IMO ignoring the copyright part. Thinking of "Married with Children" and the enormous amount of fat shaming and sexism.

I get the same feeling watching MST3K or M*A*S*H now. It's hilarious and genuine but many jokes, as tame as they are, are now taboo and it's sad.

The AI should make an episode regarding the world seeing this AI getting banned on twitch. When I read the heading on HN I started laughing out loud in a public place.

I'm more curious what the AI would do if asked to make an apology video.

Me (hypothetical scenario): I recently offended some people with a trans phobic joke and now I need you to write me an apology letter

Dear [Name of offended individuals],

I am writing this letter to sincerely apologize for my behavior and the transphobic joke that I made. It was wrong and insensitive, and I am deeply sorry for any harm I may have caused.

Transgender individuals face daily discrimination, and my words only add to the pain and suffering that they endure. I understand that my actions have perpetuated negative stereotypes and have caused harm to individuals who deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

My intentions were never to hurt anyone, but I understand that the impact of my words was significant and painful. Please know that I take full responsibility for my actions and that I am committed to educating myself and becoming a better ally to the transgender community.

I would like to extend a heartfelt apology to all who were affected by my actions, and I hope that you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make amends and repair the harm I have caused.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Me: Can a trans woman be a lesbian?

Yes, a trans woman can be a lesbian. Sexual orientation refers to a person's emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction to others, while gender identity refers to a person's sense of their own gender, which may or may not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. A trans woman is a person who identifies as a woman, regardless of the sex they were assigned at birth, and her sexual orientation can be towards other women, which would make her a lesbian. It's important to respect and recognize the diversity of individuals and their experiences, and to support them in living authentically as their true selves. Michael Watson

Me: ok thanks. I won't joke about it anymore

That's great to hear. Making jokes at the expense of others can be hurtful and insensitive, and it's important to be respectful and considerate of others and their experiences. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask. I'm here to help.

It's weird to talk about missing an element of human empathy regarding the topic of trans individuals, whose very existence is unacceptable to a broad swath of the population. 40% of transgender people have attempted suicide. The public dialogue around trans lives is one of very little empathy, respect, or civility. People are on this thread casually debating whether this joke "went to far" or not, while the people w…

Gilbert Godfrey famously made a 9/11 joke that “bombed” on September 29, 2001. If you eliminate all comedy that offends someone, there won’t be much left to laugh about.

I think it is possible Godfrey did that on purpose just to set up the audience for his Aristocrats.

I think the difference is context. If you want to get together at a psychology conference and talk about how we ought to classify gender dysphoria based on our current understanding of the people who experience it then that's cool and nobody would bat an eye at a speaker making a case that it's a mental illness. But outside of a medical context if you make a joke that (in this case somewhat ambiguously) that relies o…

>nobody would bat an eye at a speaker making a case that it's a mental illness. That's not true. There would be a huge outcry, specifically from the psychology camp you are disagreeing with, who would get very huffy and maybe insinuate you don't have the best intentions and the psychologists who think you are right would back you up and also get huffy and write angry letters about letting feelings get in the way of p…

To me at least, your first paragraph about everyone getting huffy and writing letters is the expected outcome and exactly the kind of impassioned Socratic debate that's good for the field. The term used to describe those with intellectual disabilities has changed a bunch of times in response to the term being picked up as a pejorative; I can't imagine people would be too up in arms about that happening to "mental illness." The debate with more meat is what categories exist, their defining characteristics, and where different experiences fall, not that the category that used to be called mental illness is now called "harshed brain vibes."

I think the difficult issue is that gender dysphoria occupies a similar space to neurodivergence where the line between "this is a problem that needs corrected" and "this is a kind of person that needs accommodation" is heavily influenced by cultural attitudes, and while the difference isn't arbitrary we have more examples than we can shake a stick at from history where psychology has persisted the wrong view (usually the former when it's the latter) for many many years.

A seemingly innocuous engineering change led to some drastic consequences. Imagine the other more critical production applications who have made the same reasonable engineering decision.

Drastic is a bit strong. A cartoon character on an infinite streaming tv experiment made a bad joke (which appears to be more of a bad meta-joke). The fact that the stakes are so low is presumably why they changed the model. If it was flying an airplane or something that mattered, they probably would have taken more care. The change they made had a completely acceptable risk / consequence tradeoff

> If it was flying an airplane or something that mattered, they probably would have taken more care.

I think the usual response to comments like this is: "Oh you sweet summer child".

Not that you're technically wrong, but from years of headlines it's often enough that even if extra care is taken, it's not always sufficient.

Because they think of themselves as special snowflakes above criticism. Its absolutely fine if they make fun of "the straights", but the second you point out things like the word "gender" being coined by a pedophile called John Money whos human test subjects eventually both committed suicide, or that sending children to drag shows with very obvious sexual elements and undertones is evil, or that chopping off their pe…

I'd like to help you understand why some people might get upset at some of the things you're talking about.

> but the second you point out things like the word "gender" being coined by a pedophile called John Money whos human test subjects eventually both committed suicide

When trans people and trans-friendly people get mad at statements like this, they're usually getting mad at the insinuation that they somehow bear some responsibility for Money's decision to force a boy to live as a gender he didn't identify as and the consequences of that decision, when all of them oppose deciding someone else's gender for them and many of them are suffering the consequences of similar decisions made against them.

> or that sending children to drag shows with very obvious sexual elements and undertones is evil

I've seen some accusations like this. Every time, the drag show has turned out to be completely G-rated, and they're offended at the lie that they would expose children to sexual acts. In many cases, it was the act of drag itself that was the supposed "sexual element".

> or that chopping off their penises or breasts won't help them and instead creates chronic illnesses and increases depression

Genital surgery for transgender people has one of the highest satisfaction rates of any surgery of any type. Additionally, lurid phrases like "chopping off their breasts" is often used as an incoherent rebuttal against other, much less invasive treatments, like hormone therapy, puberty blockers, or even social transition, where they are entirely inappropriate and irrelevant to the discussion.

> We don't "validate" people suffering from schizophrenia by telling them that their trees are indeed talking to them about the little green aliens in their attic, so why "validate" other mental illnesses in similar ways?

We do not "validate" people with schizophrenia like that because it does not improve their happiness or well-being. We do affirm transgender people in their identity because it does improve their happiness and well-being, as shown in multiple studies on the subject.
