I've only experienced that on embedded videos, not on youtube.com . Are you experiencing it on youtube.com ? I tried it just now, and was able to view a video on youtube.com , pause it, and keep reading the subtitles with no recommendations popping up. Disclosure: I work at Google but not YouTube.

Yes, it's possible that you are right - I checked it on a random video, and there is no overlay.

Shorts are up to 3 minutes long now. At this point they are just vertical videos. I fully expect the supported length to keep increasing!

Brave has a setting to disable YouTube shorts. Both on the mobile app, and desktop version.

Settings -> media -> "Block YouTube Shorts".

There are also other settings related to YouTube. Brave is the only thing I'd use for YouTube on mobile.

This is nonsense. Among other things, the YouTube app on Apple TV is superior to the one on Android TV. No loud startup sound, the back button exits the app rather than popping up a menu asking "if I'm sure" or if I want to go to a screensaver mode - clean straightforward UI.

Their customers are advertisers, not users. By the looks of things they love them.

People here might be interested in Invidious[0], a FOSS web frontend for YouTube. By default it shows 4 videos per row, but that can be trivially adjusted with CSS. It's a little light on features, but otherwise very customizable.

There's an old adage that if you follow the tech that porn adopts, you'll generally be ahead the average consumer curve. I think there's another version that if porn adopts a tech that means that the tech will work. Like, a lot of VR adoption early on was porn. By a lot, I mean most.

Has VR caught on? Genuine question; I am not a gamer, but I see no real adoption elsewhere. The occasional movie is offered in 3D, but it's generally post-rendered, which makes the effect crappier - and it's occasional, not the majority.

That popping up on your phone is not 100% reliable, though, and even more hilariously, when using it with YouTube, it'll sometimes just take the first handful of characters and drop the text input box on the phone. Oh, how we laughed. (this may be a generic Apple TV problem but it's something I've only noticed on the YouTube app)

Swipe down from the upper right and select the "remote" icon. If it's not there, edit the menu and add it.
