From their FAQ[1] the plan is to allow other countries eventually but for now it's read-only for non-Canadians. I imagine they have no interest in private KYC like Persona and integrating with national identity providers can be a real pain, if that country even has a unified service.

A real shame. Even if you put all the political arguments aside it sucks when a site requires you to log in before you can read content on it. For me that’ll mean I just don’t read content on there any more. Which I realise X doesn’t care about, I’m not monetisable anyway. But a shame nonetheless.

Getting around Twitter's blocking of non-logged-in accounts predates Musk's purchase of Twitter. I don't know the specifics of XCancel, but the niche existed beforehand.

This. It bugs me that we can’t read without logging in, and other UX decisions that basically made me quit using it for like 7 or 8 months now.

You should've removed your account too.

You won't miss much.
