That whole feature is kind of paragraph 22. No legit/popular site uses it so users don't expect national characters in domain names, so no one actually hosts sites using "xn-" domains.

It may be true in the US, but don't lots of domains in Asia use xn-?

It would make it hard to spot impostor domains like "news.усомbiнаtor[.]сом" if it was. There's enough inertia for FQDNs to be strictly ASCII and any UTF-8(outside ASCII) in domain names to be felt unnatural for an URL, so most systems default to the raw "Punycode" xn-- scheme for all IDNs.

Safari at least shows the proper マリウス.com - I believe it has more complicated heuristics that boil down to "if it looks like a real script, show it, if it looks like some mangled English, show the xn-"

The difference is "datacenter equipment" has changed - it used to be large rack mount servers that, while a bit silly to run at home, at least could be done if you wanted to spend the power budget.

These are entire datacenters build for one thing - and they're water-cooled and integrated so tightly that it's unlikely you can do much with any parts or part of the setup.

The difference between buying an off-lease Dell server and trying to buy part of a supercomputer - which is what these really are. They're not datacenter; they're custom-built supercomputers.

Much easier with AI. Went from Webhosting all-in package + NAS to Hetzner Storage Share and a separate Emailprovider (Runbox). Blogging/Homepage as Cloudflare Pages, fed by Github, domains from CF and porkbun, Tailscale, etc., etc. ad nauseam, NAS stil…

Same for me. I’m not an engineer (but worked with them for 2 decades) and AI has been amazing for me self hosting.

For example I could never setup Traefik correctly because I just found it too complicated. Now I have Claude I finally got it setup just the way I want it - the ROI on my Claude subscription has been off the scale!

The obvious downside is that I might not really know what exactly I’m implementing and why. I do read all the explanations that Claude gives but it’s hard to retain this information. So there are pros and cons to relying on AI for this kind of stuff I suppose

I think we're talking about 2 different things. I'm not sure where Roblox fits into what I said. The problem I describe is companies pushing towards the "rent" model vs. "buy to own". GeForce Now might have price increases that obviate that seemimg price discrepancy over ten years.

Asahi Linux is NOT an option and may never be one due to: The A18 Pro (and M4) introduced SPTM — Secure Page Table Monitor — which runs at a higher privilege level (GXF EL2) than the OS kernel. Unlike M1/M2/M3 where m1n1 can directly chainload Linux, on A18 Pro/M4 the page table infrastructure is owned by SPTM and must be initialized by XNU before anything else can run.
