  > that is an unsubstantiated claim that's actually false and doesn't even preclude the right of any group of people in sufficient majority to exercise self-govern, by their mere will and manifestation,
There was no majority, no will, no manifestation. Only Russian soldiers and operatives cosplaying as "separatists" to carve off a piece of another country. It's waste of everyone's time to pursue this contrived narrative and try to shoehorn it into something seemingly real.

  > that vote didn't reach the required 3/4 of the threshold required by the constitution for impeachment.
They didn't vote for impeachment, but to hold early elections. Impeachment is an American thing. European democracies replace failed governments through negotiations between parliamentary factions, and if they fail to form a new government or prefer to request a fresh mandate from the electorate, hold elections ahead of the regular schedule.

  > yanukovich had allegedly relinquished his position, which actually means he had to flee the country for his life because of the threat of the nazi nationalists
Yanukovych fled the country after 108 protesters were killed and he was about to get criminally charged for his role in it. His political base of support collapsed overnight, as is evident from the unanimous vote of Ukrainian parliament to hold early elections: not even a single member of his own party voted in favor of Yanukovych. His desperate last-minute attempts to negotiate some deal to save his ass fell through and he ran.

Now the interesting question to me is why is that a country with a tenth of population can have car, truck and military plane manufacturing yet Canada can’t, even with virtually all resources for inputs, including energy can’t.

We have a larger partner speaking the same language and with a largely synonymous culture and a heavily integrated economy as our neighbour. The moment a Canadian company sees success -- in optics, autos, science, medicine, weaponry, etc. -- it is absorbed by a larger US company and suddenly is no longer Canadian, and in many cases any Canadian operations will usually get choked out. There are few examples where this…

Well, couldn’t you say the same thing about Sweden? Germany is right there. They could have bought Volvo, but they didn’t. Scania was independent for a long time and had actively protected from take overs, but eventually still succumbed to VW.

Also, Canada lost many things w/o US acquisitions. What happened to Corel? Nortel? Research in Motion?

Sweden does not have a car industry. The fighter jets are a different matter, very strong technical moat and need to prove the system in combat. You can't just start a fighter jet business.

Volvo, used to have Saab. Scania trucks.

Volvo still produces cars in Sweden. Koenigsegg still build their cars in Ängelholm.

The Top Gear enthusiast in me loves that you included Koenigsegg in this conversation. But including a company that hand-builds a handful of hypercars annually in a conversation about the auto industry in Sweden is not the flex you think it is.

For me (op) it is the flex. My question was why Canada cannot do this.

Trump being a temporary phenomenon would be a more plausible claim if his presidency had been a single term.

Trump could be elected for a third term and it could still be a temporary phenomenon, because the movement fails to transfer beyond one individual's personality.

This is incredibly complacent. The Heritage foundation view of where the US is going has been thoroughly inserted into American public life by a thorough politicisation of all public agencies. It would take an equally dominant and ruthless force to cleanse what Trump has done. I don't see that happening. Your judiciary and corporate interests have a momentum that should not be underestimated.

Breaking things is much easier than making them. American democracy is going to take a long time to recover.

Because, your comments are contrafactual and not grounded in reality. When you make frankly hysterical statements the gist of which is that Israel is uniquely evil (more than Iran which massacred over 30,000 pro-democracy protesters in the span of two days this year, for example), it is clear that you’ve left reality far behind in your rear view-hence derangement.

> which massacred over 30,000 pro-democracy protesters are you really this gullible? the last reliable numbers I saw capped the figures at ~7000, which includes people killed because they were (according to videos I saw) castrating government officials and roasting them over a spit. Look, I'm as anti-state as any respectable person can be, but I don't see and evidence of protestor massacres.

In the videos you've seen, were the protesters roasting government officials over a spit, or the officials' detached scrotums? Cause you know, I've done the former, but the latter is really depraved.

Alas I'm not nearly funny enough to properly convey the depth of my amusement here. Who hasn't roasted a government official over a spit here and there though?

Historically, it isn't Canada that's been threatening to leave NATO.

That's true. But if America is so bad, why are you still in it? I'm an immigrant to the US. I'm sorry you are so ready to throw away what people went through hell to get.

That's true. But if America is so bad, why are you still in it?
I am not. I have never lived in the US. I live in Canada, and I've had my country's sovereignty threatened by the US in the past 18 months.

Germany doesn't speak the same language. It has a hugely different culture, history and peoples. No, you absolutely can't say the same thing, and I think you missed the vast majority of my post.

>Also, Canada lost many things w/o US acquisitions.

I'm not sure what the point of this is, and exceptions don't disprove the rule. Loads of companies rose and fell in the US as well, just like every country on the planet.
