Some modern phones do DisplayPort over USB C.

I plugged my iPhone 16 into my usb-C docking station the other day to charge it and was pretty surprised to discover it just started mirroring my phone screen. Keyboard worked too!

It depends on the app — mirroring is the default, but apps can do smarter things as well. See for example the NYT crossword app.

Not always. Try to buy a reasonably priced car or truck, with a price no higher than the last 20 years of inflation applied to a vehicle price from 20 years ago.

A 2006 Miata started at $21k. A 2026 starts at $30.4K. This is an increase of 45%, less than the 61%-ish official inflation numbers over that time period. This is not unique.

If only there wasn't a security update treadmill forcing everyone to do regular hardware upgrades.

My "new" computer is a laptop with an 8th-gen i5 and 8 gb ram salvaged from the Windows 11-incompatibility heap (actually 3 of them, so I have 16gb in it). I installed Kubuntu on it and it runs extremely well. I can even install Windows 11 in a VM if I really need it. I'll probably be buying new (old) ram for it and maybe a bigger drive.

No, they didn't. It was straightforwardly unsafe and broken, the heaps of effort that went into supporting it were largely just to paper over that fact. It's no accident that the other browser vendors went along with dropping support so quickly after Apple did.

The reason given for blocking Flash on iOS at the time was it's too cpu intensive on mobile, which impacts battery life. Not that it was "unsafe and broken". The main reason other browsers stopped supporting Flash was websites stopped being built with Flash because iOS didn't support it, and a lot of people thought that mattered even though iOS had (and still has) a small market share world-wide.

Sure, he's laying out a case for the app store they'd later introduce, but it wasn't simply CPU and battery. There's a reason I cited crash logs as the primary thing I remembered about how it affected me. It gave me an immediate reason to share with people about why I couldn't fix Safari crashes when Flash was involved, which made that aspect of my job easier to explain.

You're correct that this is true, but wrong in that it is not relevant.

SOTA fabs are used for cutting edge CPU/GPU chips. You do not need a SOTA fab to create DDR5 memory or SSD memory. There are a number of companies able to create the lithography machines to do so, and dozens of actual operators of those machines.

Being in control of your own computing device was always a niche. The vast majority of people are not interested in computing itself, only in the output. For that majority, this is fine. This is the correct stance - even in the era of "total personal computer control" the vast majority of people were not in control - they had a friend or child or parent or IT department who was really in control, they were just along for the ride.

And a large number of those people jump at getting them an iPad instead of the perpetual tech support required.

This article inspired me to look and see what this computer is. Apparently it is a "AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250 Processor" from 2009. So 17 years old. It has 8 GB of DDR3 memory and runs at 3 GHz. It currently has OpenBSD on it, but at least one source thinks it could run Windows 10. The fact that I didn't know any of this is what is significant here. Did any of the components fail over time? HDD/SSD? Pretty surprising to have this thing still be working 17 years later, unless it spent a good chunk of that in 'cold storage'.

Hardware has a weird case of either dying pretty quickly or running forever, in my experience.

I think I can count on one hand the total number of drives I've ever had fail - and four of those were in the warranty period, back in the 90s-2000s.

In order to go from 360p video 15 years ago to 4K HDR today, I have upgraded from a 2mbps 802.11g WiFi on a 1366x768 display to a 200mbps connection on 802.11ax and a 55 inch 4k television. The experience is quite immersive and well worth the upgrade that happened very progressively (WiFi 5 1080p then WiFi 6/7 4K).

At the same time, we had cheap consumer gigabit ethernet, and still have cheap consumer gigabit ethernet. 2.5 is getting there price-wise, but switches are still somewhat rare/expensive.

Emphasis on "somewhat" - I was able to build a 10GB backbone for my NAS and such for less than $200 or so with a CRS305 and some direct connect cables; looks like the CRS304 would have made this even easier ...

To be fair, I only started this because the dock I got had 10G - https://www.owc.com/solutions/thunderbolt-pro-dock and I saw some 10G cards on eBay cheap and my old Nortel switch had a 10G uplink and ... well, you know how it goes!
