It's actually not that bad for GPUs considering their useful life is much shorter than regular compute. DC-grade CPU servers cost 12-24mo of typical public cloud prices but you can run em for 6-8 years.

Nothing breaks, the hardware is just fine. Obviously newer generations of GPUs are more efficient, but CPU hardware improves a lot too.

It’s not about them physically breaking but more about them being obsolete although we may be seeing the end of that trend soon

Isn't it sad we're not able to invest into most new tech companies these days, with private equity taking the lead. I don't blame the companies after seeing what going public entails, but still unfortunate.

Yes. This is a real problem. It started as a result of the Enron collapse. The government over corrected in an effort to keep the public safe from fraud. On the flip side many people with pensions are invested in private markets through their pension funds.
